Purchase extended warranty?

Hi. I just bought an RX-8 yeaterday and will pick it up tomorrow. I told the dealer I would think about getting the extended warranty for additional 2 years and 25K miles (i.e 6 years/75,000 mi instead of standard 4 year/50,000 mi). The cost is a shade under $1500 (US). Does this seem worth it? I have never used the warranty on any previous car I've owned. It seems like f I needed something done, in years 5 or 6 , if I spent less than $1500, i'd still be ahead of the game. Any advice?

Also, I paid about $26K for my '05 RX-8 with sport pacakge and aero package ($3000 off MSRP). Did I get a decent deal?

I bought the warranty initially but then cancelled it. From what I was reading, it does not really cover anything (fine print...) and it is still not originally from Mazda. You can buy it twice as cheap directly from the warranty company.

IMO extended warranty (unless given for free) should be avoided especially if you don't drive alot of miles. Short of getting the engine or whole transmission replaced everything else should cost you less than $1500. Remember that EW have limited coverage (plenty of exclusions). You'll be better off investing the money and in 4 years have money to spend on pretty much anything that can happen.

I bought warranty up to 4 years/100K miles for my Mazda Protege for $850 with zero deductible over at warrantydirect.com. Haven't had to use it yet, but it's pretty good to have a peace of mind for 50K over the manufacturer's warranty. I'm currently at 90K miles and only 10K and 1.5 years to go. Chances are, something will break at 101K :) The warranty I got was bumper-to-bumper (almost as good as the factory warranty).

You might want to ask the dealer as to the type of coverage you get. You can always buy this warranty afterwards (before 10K, a slight price bump after 10K), once you get a hang of how much you drive per year.

At the Mazda Dealer They offered 4or 5 diff things as of warranty's .. tire and wheels.. paint .. interiorr .. .. I bought the 5 yr / 100,000 total care for 1900.00 including tires and wheels and alarm and this is the Mazda Warr.

Many thanks for the advice. In the end I decided to hold off on getting the extended warranty. I don't put taht many miles on my cars and figured $1500 for 2 years was not in my favor. Hope I don't regret it later... :o

I don't believe Mazda USA is in the business to sell extended warranty. Mazda may endorse it but I bet you a pretty penny it's from a third party insurance company (look for under heading of "offered by" or "underwritten by").

In case you didn't find the thread describing my sojourn through the land of extended warranties, take a look at this -

https://www.rx8club.com/purchasing-financing-insurance-56/extended-warranty-again-57791/

Bottom line, I bought one from Warranty Direct that is called a "bumper to bumper exclusionary policy". My understanding of this term is that it coveres everything EXCEPT those items specifically excluded in the contract. Other "non-exclusionary" contracts cover only those things specifically identified in the contract. How does the average person know how many "unmentioned" parts there are in their car? Anything not identified may not be covered. You don't know until it happens. Now, I may be way off base in this interpretation, but that was a major consideration in my purchase. BTW, in my search I found that most other 3rd party companies didn't even list the RX-8 as a car they would cover!

Well, only time will tell if I made a good decision. YMMV

Zoom, Zoom :o

Mazda sells MEPP= Mazda Extended Protection Plan which is a Mazda plan backed by APCO which is 100% owned by Ford. Total Care bumper to bumper. Suprising how few dealers push this warranty. I was told by GM of Mazda dealership, that they don't make as much as they do selling some aftermarket warranties. companies.

I stand corrected...
