Hi, just picked up an rx-8 Teusday (or actually my wife did ) great car for the turns, feels solid.

a couple of questions, the manual says nothing of this "flooding" issue. How do I avoid it? Is it just in cold temps or is it ok to start and stop the engine once it is warmed up?



Also just noticed the state inspection expires 12-05..... :mad:

Congratulations on the purchase! I have had mine since 19 June '04. I just recently had an issue with the flooding - several threads have correctly stated that the engine temperature gauge must read warm (mid-way) before shutting it off. This is usually at that range after about 5 minutes.

For washing the car I have 2 of my kids push the car out and then of course I drive it around WELL beyond the 5 minutes.

One other tidbit I learned from this forum is that you can rev the engine up to ~ 4000rpm and then shut it off - also seems to help. I have had no issues with the car since doing this.

That's really unfortunate that you weren't made aware of the issue. I must have gotten a good salesman because he told me about letting the car warm up and about checking the oil regularly and went through the addendum to the manual that details the cold start procedure, etc.
They even did the MSP04 flash for me before I took delivery, although I think that was because I brought it up. Knock on wood, but my car has been solid so far (since August this year).

i thought flooding only happened if you didn't let the engine warm up enough (ie jsut moving it short didtance than shut her down). it'll flood b/c fuel will collect around the injectors and the engine isn't hot enough to burn it off (or something like that...don't quote me b/c i normaly get confused...dang shot term memory). The manuel has how fix teh flood..but in order to avoid it i let my car idle when i turn it on until it is at operating temp (about 5 minutes), or close to it then i keep it at about 3.5k while driving so i don't mess her up until she get all the way warrmed up. I've never done the whoel rev abefor shuting her off and i've never flooded (30k miles so far). but in d.c. it doesn' tget super cold (lowest has been about 23 or so deg this year). hoe tha thelped out some. but there are a heck of a lot of threads about flooding (how to prevent it and fix it)

The car is Nordic green with Grand touring package. Like I said really fun through the turns. It's my wifes though, I drive a Mustang Mach1, lots of power and tourqe but will scare the nuts out you in a turn if something goes wrong, like uneven pavement or the like, so it's nice to have both around the garage. :)

The dealership really did not say much about any of the "special attention" the rotary requirs but that's ok. I had all ready researched a bit here beforehand so I knew what I was getting into.

I'll grab my manual and other info and post it all here in a little bit. I know it talks about the rev-to-3000 rpm procedure in detail.
