Insurance Classification for RX-8

I've read in some of these threads that some insurance companies have the RX-8 listed as a 4 door vehicle. Does anyone have any idea which companies do have the 8 listed in this class. I don't have an 8 yet, but I am very seriously considering one. I have gotten quotes from my current insurance (Allstate), and my premium will be over $100 per month. Anyone have any suggestions on other carriers that may be cheaper. I do understand that insurance quotes are individually specific, but if anyone knows how the insurance companies have the car classified, it may be a starting point to find the lowest rates.
Thanks

You shouldn't limit your search. Who knows...a company that classifies it as a 2-door might be the lowest rate. You never know how they price all the factors that go into your premium.

SmokeyTheBalrog 06-13-2007 08:34 AM

Yeah, the 2-door vs 4-Door is meaning less. They only do that for cars with different versions. I.e. sedan vs coupe versions. (This way each version gets its own rating)

Since there is only one kind of Rx-8 it doesn't matter.

They compute your insurance with based on what car, what age, which sex, and some other values that are supposed to be indicative of one's risk factor.

I have USAA and they consider the 8 a 4dr which substantially lowered my rate.

kersh4w 06-13-2007 11:36 PM

i have geico and i pay 5k/year.

and they consider it a 4 door sedan with a 1.3l 2 cylinder engine. by their standards, its a glorified golf cart, wtf with 5k?

I believe state farm classified it as a 4 door coupe. They did however change the safety category it is in and my insurance jumped up about 25 a month last time it rolled over. I currently pay ~$175/month (~$15 of that is from an accident surcharge)

4dr sedan in general. Insurance rates are based on many factors not only just the number of doors.

I have USAA and it's substantially more expensive for me to insure an RX-8 than a Corvette. I could insure a Porsche Cayman S for less as well.

You absolutely, 100% cannot, at all, whatsoever, in no way shape or form, learn anything of any kind from asking other people about their insurance rates. I don't want to sound like a jerk, but these threads ALWAYS turn into "my insurance pwns yours!1!!" and are the epitome of uselessness.

Here's the only advice that works -- call every insurance company that you would consider getting based on their reputations for service, etc and then go with the lowest price. Personally, service is incredibly important to me so I'd pay a little more to go with the company that has the best reputation.

Wow

I have Geico too.

I got my car 2 years ago,

1st 1/2 year, 2K for 6 months
2rd 1/2 year, 1.8K for 6 months
3th 1/2 year 1.6K for 6 months
4th 1/2 year 1.5k for 6 month (the one Im in now, few days more and it will be over)

5th 1/2 year, coming soon in a few more days, 1.2k for 6 months.

I've been checking with other sites like progressive.com, they have almost always lower rates than Geico. Lets say the next renewel the Progressive rates are about 150 bux lower than Geico. Reason Im not switching is that I have the Mechanical Breakdown coverage. If its about 300 bux lower hell I will 100% switch.

Another reason is that, I helped my father to get a claim from Geico b4 (some moron back up and hit my father's car, broke the bumper and the hood hook), the service was fast and painless, thats the important. Im not saying Progressive(or other insurance comp) have bad service, is just that I had this experience b4, so Hey, its good.

to OP :

It doesnt matter 4 or 2 or even 6 or 8 10 doors. Insurance rate depends on the company's own rate + national Average on the specific car.

The type of coverages and deductibles varies so much that just costs noted here are like apples and oranges. So the best thing to do is shop based on comparing your current insurer quote to another for the same coverage limits.

I switched from Liberty Mutual (with them for 20 years) last year, at the time my annual insurance was around $3200 for three vehicles (04 RX8, 96 Miata, 97 Montero Sport). Shopped around found the exact same coverage through Esurance at $1800.

And for those who may worry about using an online company, I had a claim shortly after switching. It was handled promptly, worked out well with my repair shop. The shop supplied digital photos of the damage with the estimate. Over a certain value, Esurance uses local independent appraisers to verify. My rate did not go up on renewal either.

I have State Farm, and they list the RX-8 as a 4-door sedan. They do charge extra for the Shinka, which I do not have. Mine is a 2006 GT that I got in 2006, and it replaced my wife's 99 Honda Accord Coupe as far as our insurance goes. I am the daily driver, no accidents, and 36 years old. 3 cars on the policy, and in the DC area (BTW, my insurance went up on our Honda and down on our 4Runner just for moving to DC - your location also matters for insurance costs). Overall, our insurance went up about $120 a year over the 99 Accord.

esurance just quoted me about $83 a month for full coverage. I've had progressive for many years, with no claims or tickets adn they want $123 a month for teh RX-8. Shop around. I'll be cancelling my Progressive policy as soon as I take delivery of the RX-8.

What difference does it make? If you want to know what they'd charge YOU then YOU need to call them and ask them the rate they'll give YOU. It's really not rocket science here people.

I just switched to Progressive, and my 6 mo premium on my Jetta is $247. The agent ran the Mazda, which I'm considering buying as well, and the rate was $500 for 6 mo. The RX8 is classified as a sports car. He then told me that anything Mazdaspeed was as well.
I'm 34, 2 cars, in WI, clean MVR for 5 years for comparison.

Interesting. Progressive quoted me about $700 for six months for the RX8 but only $500 for six months on the Mazdaspeed6 (and about the same for a Volvo S40 T5 AWD). So, there certainly seems to be something that they don't like about the RX8.

kvndoom 07-16-2007 05:24 PM

When I got my RX-8 Saturday my premium through Progressive skyrocketed. It went from about 90$ a month for the Mazda6 to over 180$ for both cars (1033$ for 6-month premium). I went online, got some quotes (esurance.com and insurance.com), and the best I got for both cars (identical coverage) was 730$ for 6 months from AIG. I called Progressive this morning and told them to match it or I'd drop them. My premium magically went to about 750$ in a matter of minutes, which was close enough for me to stay with Progressive. For now, at least.

You have to treat your insurance company the same way you treat the dealer when you buy the car. "If you can't make me happy, somebody else will, and for less."

Hmm.. Thats very interesting.. Good to hear that places like that has good service.

I currently have Liberty and just got a quote for an 04 RX8. It raised my premium by almost $100 more by replacing my current Daily. I might check out Esurance.

Herblenny 07-23-2007 03:22 PM

OK, I just called Esurance and seems very fishy..

I was looking to get quick quote and they started asking way TOO much info..

I finally had to say its too much info to just get basic quote... They kept saying we needed to give you the discount.. i would be cautious about companies like this... Please Beware!

maskedferret 07-23-2007 04:01 PM

I am with Esurance myself and from what I can see, they label the car as an "RX8 Coupe 4 Door". I have full coverage with moderate amounts. I will let you know that I got this car after having a 2003 Hyundai Elantra under Esurance, and my payments went up from ~$475 to ~$525 over 6 months. I am over 25 and have a clean driving record (with the exception of a few isolated speeding tickets once a year or so that I have gotten fixed by a lawyer).

Rems31 07-23-2007 04:09 PM

Who wants to compare apples to oranges???

Brilliant_06 07-23-2007 06:01 PM

Geico had the lowest rates on insurance for my scenario. The rates were the same as they were for a 350z if that means anything. The car isn't cheap to insure, but it isn't as bad as a lot of other cars.

I got my quotes online, and I'd recommend anyone else do the same. esurance and insurance.com both offer quotes from multiple companies, which you can compare to your current rates (and use as a bargaining tool). You WILL have to surrender some personal information (SS#, address, etc) because they have to run your credit, driving history, etc. Just make sure you're on a secure site (look for the padlock on your browser and "https" instead of "http" in your address bar). The time spent will more than likely pay for itself.

Saved over $800 per year (three cars, house, and umbrella policy) by dropping American Family and going with AAA. Others were close on the premium but their ratings were not as good.
Just depends on your ratings vs. the company's risk experience; and your claim record (wife has had bad luck about every three years)..
BTW - insurance companies share even the smallest details about you and your claims/ticket history!

heyarnold69 07-24-2007 06:14 PM

USAA 6 months full coverage ... $412.47 total

4 door does give discount!!!!!!
