Same stuff here:

I don't have too much experience with msn, but I think edmunds is really great. They have their own reviews, lots of specs, their own estimates of what prices most people pay in one area, estimated maintenance costs (not yet for the 8), jd power figures, auto show coverage.... I check it out at least on a weekly basis :)

Also check out this site http://www.carbuyingtips.com/ before buying a car. Very useful info.

good site adrian.. I used it to avoid any of those strange fees that the dealer likes.

Proper research is the way to go!

FYI...

There is a $1500 dealer incentive on the 8. At least there is one here in NJ.

Can you verify this through MNAO?? Or is it just a dealer "special"?? Because I have never heard of a factory to dealer incentive that is state specific....

idle0ne 01-24-2004 04:32 PM

i heard there was a new incentive to finance is that what the $1500 is?

Velocity-8 01-24-2004 05:56 PM

I leased and got the $1500 incentive.

The dealer really wanted to move the car. They have a ton of stock on the lot. I ended up getting about $3500 off MSRP including the incentive.

Usually Edmund's lists all the rebates.

idle0ne 01-24-2004 06:03 PM

yea so for us folks who are not financing that sucks, but i think i got the best deal i could get THANKS MY10AE :)

meeh 01-25-2004 12:20 AM

I heard that there is a dealer incentive to move the rx-8, that's why when i was trading in the rx-8 they gave me such a low price.

idle0ne 01-25-2004 12:32 AM

meeh, thier incentive is that it is winter ;)

not many people are buying rx8's in the winter months and each month a car sits in thier lot/showroom i forget how much it is but they have to pay a fee for each car. if they sell the car they dont have to worry about paying that fee each month. That is why some dealers will drop a little bit below invoice to get the car out of thier posession. If i am correct i think it is something like $300/mo per car.

There is also the Dealer holdback. I think it's after 60 days they loose that too. The holdback is usually 3-4% of MSRP and paid by the manufacture. Even if a Dealer sells a car at their cost they still make a few hundred on the car.

I belive I read that Mazdas holdback is 2% of invoice.

Blue87Sport 01-26-2004 02:35 PM

Actually according to:
http://www.safecarguide.com/gui/neg/holdback.htm
Mazda's holdback is 2% of base MSRP. That's about $600 for an RX-8.

It's not that the holdback goes away but rather the holdback pays the interest on the car for the first 90 days. So if the dealer sell it before then, they keep the rest. After 90 days, the dealer is paying the interest out of their pocket.

So even selling at invoice, the dealer can make about $500-$600.
