If I buy a new 2004 RX8 6 MT w/ sports package (MSRP $28,175, Invoice of $25,935)and put 12000 miles per year on it what will it be worth in:

3 years (with 36,000 miles):

almost 4 years (about 48,000 miles but still under warranty):



I know the cars take a huge hit the first year due to the incentives. Keep in mind that I'd buy a 2004 model year but it will be new.

well no one's going to have an exact dollar amount, because it's worth what someone will pay for it. To your advantage, it was named one of the top ten cars predicted to retain it's value over the next 5 years.

well the residual on 2004s is sitting at about 49%.

Do think that car I specked, 6 Speed, 48 K miles, 4 years old (but 2004 model year) will be worth 10K?

definitely, right now a 4 year old Toyota Celica costs about 12-14k, maybe a little less with more miles. An RX-8 costs about 6-10K more than a celica to begin with, I'd say you're looking at 15-18k in four years

Factor in deductions for mods from 10% to 20% in most cases. Sometimes not recognized, non-factory mods depress the resale value of used cars simply because of the suspicion that the vehicle has been abused.

So the lesson is: Enjoy your mods but recognize that you'll probably pay for them twice, once when you get them and again when you sell your car.
