Dealer installed options
 

I'm having a hard time finding an RX-8 with the options that I want. The dealer has informed me that they could put some of these options on the car for me. However, I have no idea how this works and how the price of the car would change after all is said and done.

I'm not interested in the GT pkg but most all Auto RX-8s that come with spoiler, appearance, and rotary options have the GT pkg as well. I could deal with the touring pkg but I don't want the leather on the GT. This is the main reason my dealer suggested they could install the options on the car of my choice.

Has anyone had any experiece with this? Will they charge me extra money b/c of the labor and things of that nature? Also, if you have the chrome wheels, how much did you pay for them?

Btw, i'm planning on buying next week.

The dealers always take a middle man fee.

For example, when you buy an extended warrantee, they simply sell you a policy from another company and take a cut of the profit (read: you pay more via dealer than buying direct).

If you want strakes, my local dealership will sell it to me at MSRP ($250), then charge me $120 for install fees. If you buy the strakes from online, you'll pay $200, and can install it yourself in around 20 minutes.

Get the car you want. Don't bother with the dealer changing it unless you're willing to pay a premium for them to do so.

If you are going to have dealer installed options, negotiate the price BEFORE you buy the car and with the understanding that you wont take delivery of the car until the options are installed. If you simply buy first, then come back for the options, the dealer will probably charge you full price plus labor fees.

hmmmm, interesting. I would like to install these parts by themselves. How difficult would it be to install the appearance pkg and spoiler on my own? Remember, I don't really have experience bolting external parts to a car and i don't know if i'm comfortable playing with a $30,000 car either.

The point is, i'm really having trouble finding one with those options and WITHOUT the GT pkg as well. I found out real quick that the car config is pretty useless on Mazda's website.

Good point, Leadfoot27, if i choose to go that route.... i'll make sure I know the full price i'm paying before I pick the car up.

went by the dealership today, they said they could find a car for me but i would have to put a deposit down to get it next week which sounds a little bogus to me.... if they really wanted to sell me the car, they'd find it free of charge

is this a legitimate demand to have a car DX'ed into the dealership?

btw, i had her run the numbers for me.... the parts are more expensive for me to buy and then i pay labor on top of that so obviously that option is out

also, does giving them this deposit tie me down to purchasing the car that comes into the dealership (in other words, could i get this money back if i decide to pull out)?

Its not uncommon for a dealer to swap a car with another dealer to get one w/ the options its customer wants. Sometimes the dealer has to pay the other dealer a "swap fee". In any case, if you're worried about getting your deposit back if you decide not to get the car, make sure the dealer puts in writing that the deposit is refundable. Remember, "if its not in writing it doesnt exist".
