I think its a pass. The price is high for an '05 with a re manufactured engine. Don't know how familiar you are with the history of the car, but long story short early models had some issues (which have been fixed on later years) and it is common to see them listed with "replaced" engines as the ad says.

Its worth noting however that it was NOT replaced with a brand new engine. It would have been replaced with a re-manufactured engine and, again long-story short, sometimes you get a good one and sometimes you don't. They're a gamble.

$8,000ish would be a more fair price for that car. Again, I would watch out though. Current owner seems like a high-school kid judging from this line "I have to go to college next year or I would otherwise never part with it".

Some kids take good care of their cars, but many don't.

He lists MSRP as justification for the 12K asking price, which is irrelevant. RX-8's do not hold their value well. I bought my '09 last year with 35K miles for $15,000: So much better deals than this are out there. My advice would be to wait.

If the original owner has oil receipts for the life of the re-manufactured engine or service history of the car's life all together, it really does not matter whether or not it's a re-manufactured engine as there will still be a bit of the warranty left over. (Check with Mazda HQ or Dealer) Usually a re-man engine would increase the value of the car as rotaries will higher mileage tend to not last very long and need a replacement. It's usually a hit or miss with the Mazda re-mans though.

The price is a bit high even with the low miles, he talks about a bit of damage to the vehicle, unless he's just talking about casual dings. I would say try to get him to knock the price down to around $9,000-$10,000. Unless the car has been wrecked or needs a new engine and is out of warranty, it's unlikely to get an '05 with 40k miles for $8,000. 8's do not hold their value well, but there is eventually a point of how low they can go for a period of time.

+1

Personally I wouldn't pay over 10k CDN (8500~9k usd) for a 7 year old RX8 in perfect condition.
