7 or 8?
 

Hey guys,

im new to these forums, but i was wondering, which you guys think i should get, my girlfriends brother and dad both have RX7's but i cant decide whether to get an RX7 or an RX8, any help? lol

Get a 7

lol thats true, they dont like RX8's, but they said and i quote "we wouldnt blame you for gettin an 8, but we would be disappointed" lol. i love the power of the 7, but also love the comfort and style o the 8, and where i live its so difficult to find a RX7 that hasnt been modded out stupidly and doesn't cost stupid money. But it's lot easier to find a cheap RX8 which i can do work on myself.

I'd get the Seven.

...even if I had to drive hours to pick up a good one.

What do you want to use the car for? How reliable does it need to be?

RX-7 owners are generally speaking 'purists.' They do not see the 8 as a real continuation for the rotary legacy.

So keep things in the family and go with the 7...haha

It's true that the RX-7 was the last "pure" rotary sports car. The 8 is absolutely a continuation of the rotary legacy. It has a rotary engine and came after the RX-7 which by default makes in a continuation. That legacy just wasn't kept alive as the flagship car for the company. That honor when to the MS6. You can't call a car that isn't the fastest the "flagship".

Lol yeah, i think ill end up with a 7, just spoke to the brother in law and w had a laugh about it, i think it will end up as a 7, and ill be using the car on weekends, and i'd like it to be reliable but doesnt have to set the world alight. which is why i was thinking about the 8, since from what ive seen from my bro in laws 7, the 8 will be more reliable, since over the past 3 weeks, we've had the engine out of his car to try and fix the second turbo, that was mistake, esp when we got amon hurley just up the road form us and his dad is friends with him lol

The 8 would definitely be more reliable. The FD RX-7 is by FAR the least reliable rotary since about 1972. The thing about that car though is that it's looks are timeless and beautiful. When an RX-8 drives by, no one really notices. When an FD drives by, everyone notices.

the rx8 is a gt car ... easier to drive, handles better, reliable, 4 seats

the rx7 a pure sports car ... more power that is increased easily, harder to drive, no creature comforts, less reliable ... not a slouch in the handling department, but is def harder to control

Thanks guys. If i got a 7 it would def be a 92 efini version of the car since thats the one both father in law and bro in law have and since ive driven it i know the car well. But as said. The 8 just seems like the better choice as it is more reliable and still fast. Granted now as fast as a 7 but its still.no slough. Ill decide after santapod this year i think.

the 9 is said to be going back to its routes - fingers crossed it happens! ill be the 1st in the dealers :Peace:

get an FD...i might be trading mine for an FD or NSX. if the price is right, of course.

The FD definitely has a timeless design. The car is simply beautiful.

....but....

I wouldn't go as far as to say that nobody really notices the RX-8. I get compliments on mine all the time - especially when pulling into a gas station. Many 8 owners have shared similar experiences.

Now, if you are talking about a comparison between the 8 and the FD next to each other; then yes, the FD will turn more heads not doubt out.

But the 8 is a beautiful car too and very unique. People do notice it a lot. At least that has been my experience with mine.

If an FD RX-7 were parked next to an RX-8, no one would notice the RX-8. If you are driving through the desert in an RX-8 and you are the only car for miles, you'll get noticed...if there is someone there to notice you. RX-8's are everywhere. They are like Honda's. You don't give them a second glance. Rotary people might but to the average Joe it's just another car.

Maybe RX-8s are all over the place where you live. But where I live I NEVER see any...ever. I've driven all over the NE and I never see other RX-8s on the road. That's the reason why I mentioned I get compliments all the time.

Hard to tell on that one. Before he also refered to the MS6 as the company's flagship with the comment "It (the RX-8) can't be the flagship if it's not the fastest". I would have to say that really depends on the company's goals. Somehow I don't think Inifinity uses "speed" as it's determining factor for a Flagship vehicle. As far as I'm concerned if Mazda has a rotary in it's lineup, it's the flagship. Why? Because it's the fastest? No, it's the one thing Mazda has that no other auto maker can claim. It's the one irrefutable thing that makes them unique.

My RX-8 is the only car I've ever owned that has consistently prompted reponse from other drivers. I've been waved at, gotten thumbs up, had people go out of their way to say "beautiful car". It's still rare enough around were I live (South Jersey, Philly area) that it raises eyebrows.

I also pondered an RX-7, just the temptation of increased HP and Torque is alluring. But everyone I've asked (not rotor heads, just friends) has said they prefer the styling of the RX-8 over the RX-7. Every one. Not even one picked the RX-7.

Just sayin'.

I have owned both.
If you get an RX7, you need to be prepared to fix it yourself. RX8's can be taken to any dealer or shop for repair. The ODB II port has the error codes, which can be read and problem narrowed down.
RX7's are there any two that are the same anymore. Most have been modified to some extent, at least here in the States.
Rust is an issue on older cars. Not just body panels, but fasteners too.
I would own an FC Vert or a FD if I could find one in good and relatively un-molested condition.

RX-8's are pretty common down here so they really aren't anything all that special. They are everywhere. An FD is rare. Probably because they are always broken! I see more Ferrari's than I do RX-7's. People notice an RX-7 here.

Al: I've owned 3 FC's now and 1 FB. As beautiful as they are I refuse to own an FD! I don't have the time or money to keep fixing it. If I did have one I'd just piss off the RX-7 purists. I'd take the engine and transmission out and throw them in the trash. I'd replace them with a 6 speed and a naturally aspirated Renesis and would be done with it.

Putting a RENESIS in an FD would certainly cause RX-7 purists to be enraged at you:cwm27:

it would actually not be a bad idea after all. The FD is lighter, the RENESIS arguably more reliable.....it would make an interesting ride.

If you get the 7, make sure you have another beater/daily driver type car, something as a back-up. I live in the Niagara area in Canada, so not a lot of rx7/or 8s. But the odd 7 i've seen and talked too said if you are going to buy a 7 as a daily driver, forget it, look else where or make sure you have a beater (also for the winters here too). That's mainly why i went with the 8 right now, i know i can wake up in the morning knowing it'll start up and won't have any issues( or at least BY FAR less issues then a 7). And worst comes to worst you have a warranty, for a new engine... not so with the 7. Personally, down the road i'd love to get a rx7 or some sort of weekend warrior, but just not the time. That and i have another hobby that sucks a lot of my money. lol

In 1993 I fell in love with the FD and it was and always will be one of my dream cars. But unfortunately 90% of the FD's (or actually RX-7's in general) are a hot mess. A clean FD will always be an eye catcher but my 8 year old VR definitely still turns heads, that is for sure.
