ok, One of my buddies has a 2004 rx8 touring that had the motor blow in it. He got a brand new motor with zero miles on it and put it in but now wants to sell it. there is 100k on the tranny that has just been serviced and checked. The question is whats normal for a car like that price wise? It is in excellent shape too inside and out.

Brand new motor? Unless he bought all new parts and had it built then it is likely a Mazda reman, not new by any means. If the engine was replaced under warranty by Mazda then it is a reman.

Look on craigslist in your area and maybe some sites like autotrader.

You did not mention the trim level, or if its an automatic or manual. On nada guides in a 2004 rx8 GT manual with 100k miles is listed at a retail price of about $9000. The same car but with the lowest trim is at about $7000, and both of those would be prices in very good condition.

Yes, there have been some fine examples of well put together and highly modified RX-8's that sold for peanuts or ended up just getting parted out.

I work as a loan officer, and we use black book for loan values. (& we work in credit to that, too, of course)
But we would loan the same amount regardless of "new" engine or not. & we enter the mileage that's on the odometer, no matter what.

& private party value would be probably the same as clean retail, but with 100k miles on the car, he might want to start a little lower than that, maybe closer to average retail.
