what's wrong with discount tire?

I bought a set of new "shoes" for my baby from discount tire after stock lasted for 34000 miles.

dont exactly know what the heck went wrong with the mounting, all tires lost air and flatted out.

to make matters worst they dont open on sunday thus i am sitting duck at home until tomorrow :(

anyone has similiar story ?

Wow William. Do you keep your car in a garage? Could someone be messing with you and let the air out of your tires? That's just too weird that ALL of them lost air. :Eyecrazy:

Same rims right? No changes there? Did they mess around with the TPMS's while they had the car? They just changed the tires right? Same exact sizes?

hi Linda...car was parked at Renton airport during my cross country flight. I was utterly shock to see the rear driver side tire flatted out. I quicky drove to the nearest gas station to get it inflated and checked the remaining tires pressure. Too my surprised they were all below the psi# I just squeezed in moment before I left for the airport.

I thoroughly inspected to see if there's anything out of ordinary but could not locate one either. my initial assumption was the mounting might not be properly done. Rims and tires (Kumho ecsta spt) size are all still stock.

I checked again this morning and they were all deflated. Luckily I can finally put to use the electric tire inflator that comes with the car and drive short distance to the shop tomorrow :banghead:

Please let us know what happens!

I would guess the TPMS seals were installed wrong. It's pretty difficult to screw up mounting tires......but those valve stems on the TPMS are a problem. Hopefully they didn't screw them up :(

Interesting, I noticed the new TPMS seals were not sitting on their original positions. Could that be the culprit ?

Same rims.........so they shouldn't have touched them right? Would have been no real reason to that I can think of. Must have been just a shitty mounting job. :banghead:

I had this problem for over a month when I put new rims on and they moved the TPMS's over to the new rims. I'm really curious as to why they would've even touched them on a tire change and why the hell would they have moved the seals? Where the heck are they and how do you know they aren't where they were? You shouln't be able to see the seals at all. BTW, if you do have aftermarket rims.............I'll bet that's the issue(the TPMS seal), I dealt with it for over a month and can tell you how to fix it. I had two shops try it and they never did fix it, so I did it myself! Was an easy fix!

Don't quote me on this...but as far as I know...the sensors need to be removed to re/re the tires?? I don't have them on mine....( Canadian car)

Hmmmmmmmmm..Damn it Jim......I'm a driver not a mechanic! If that's true, then I am 100% positive it's the friggin TPMS seals! No longer any doubt!

the do not. mine have never been touch on three tire changes. i would check the nuts on the tpms and make sure they are tight, then the valve core itself.

beers

I didn't think they did, so you figure they had to mess up the seals when filling them back up? It has to be that or just bad mounting...which seems more unlikely. Why would they have even messed with the nuts? BTW........when I went through my issues, you could over-tighten the nuts and it would leak even worse. Just keep that in mind. I actually installed secondary seals....but mine were after-market rims. I left the original seals in place, put valve stem through wheel. Put second seal on valve stem and worked it down, then put nut on and tightened. Had no issues since.

pdxhak 06-03-2007 06:13 PM

That sucks. Something is not right if all fours tires are losing pressure. Hopefully they sort it out tomorrow for you.

FWIW, Discount Tire in Tigard, OR mounted my wheels with TPMS and no issues.

I talked to a buddy today who owns a tire shop. He said that he routinely removes them. He said that even the slightest bump when mounting the tire and they are F***ed. He said that if all goes well it is OK...but at the price that they are...he always takes them out.

I bet they didn't re-install them properly. There is just no other thing that they could have screwed up on all 4 tires that would make them go flat.

William......seriously............check out this thread.

https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/tpms-gasket-114960/

This has some good info and it's not too long. What you will see is that while I didn't start the thread, it shows my issue and even more importantly leads you down the path that ultimately solved it for me. You will also see that Tommy at Rosenthal Mazda(a member here, was more than helpful). The most interesting things is found near the bottom where Tommy shows the "new" gasket! I didn't go that route, but it will show you how I solved it! Your issue might be very similiar!

Good Luck!

Dave

Crazytor 06-03-2007 07:39 PM

what model's your tire BTW ? ?

thanks mazurfer.

finally got the leaks sealed off. the problem was gasket rings in my new wheel valve kits which were not properly rebuilt. their apologized for the inconvience caused. i have checked my tires pressure several times to ensure no more leakage of air and have yet to find one, thanks god.

Great....glad to hear it.......so you had stock rims and just got new tires right? So they changed the valve stems when you got the new tires and that was what the issue was? The gaskets? I'm re-reading this whole thread and wanna make sure I'm understanding correctly.

yes, my rims still stock. i went there to purchase a set of new tires for my car (Kumho ecsta spt) and the counter assosiate recommended new valve stems rebuilt kits (if i call it correcty) for new tires as well and I took his offer. the irregularity that happened during the installation was the caused of my tires to lose air pressure. I dont understand much technical details here but the guy that fixed the leaks mentioned something about some sort of rings that were not properly placed. i am assuming the gasket rings or such ?

ok i am more confused now.. they changed the gasket on a stock rim with the tpms... this is not bright...

ahhhhahhhhhhhhh,

the tpms should have never been removed unless you were changing wheels..

beers

The way things are going, I'm starting to get real tempted to buy my own damn tire machine. The number of tire shops who deserve to remain in business continues to shrink.

Unless your valve stems were leaking, there was no reason to replace them. But the sales associate did his job, and got a little extra money from you. This sort of BS always gets me spun up. Of course, I'm a bit more forceful when I get work done. I tell the shop exactly what they'll be doing to my car, if they don't like, I take my business elsewhere. On the off chance they manage to slip in an offer for other work/parts, I question them thoroughly in search of the BS indicator.

i am afraid you might be right kris. first time bought new tires for my car and since that counter person mentioned he highly recommends new valve stem rebuilt kits to come along with new tires purchase and by also thinking my oem parts had run 34K miles thus i just took his bait. kinda curious as well why they removed positions of those square metals attached to the rims (tmps sensor ?) since my car is still running on stock. i should have detected that in the beginning it was just a sales attempt by that person to sell unnecessary parts than eventually led me to this fiasco for 2 days.
