I Hate American Top Gear

Alright, so I think this deserves it's own thread. I've posted in the NW chat thread how the first episode was horrible. The second one is even worse!!!

The bearded guy is supposed to be drifting an Astin Martin through the desert. He makes some stupid comment like "Yeah, I'll hang it out there" while in the cab of the car the steering wheel is almost straight up and down ( no couter steer or corrections,) and he is sitting straight with the g-force having zero effect. Try to look outside the window? It's too bright so you can't see. When they do show the outside shot the car is drifting beautifly. He also does some fancy driving through a wherehouse. Do they really think that we believe he's actually driving through those shots? At the end of the program there is a drifting competition, and he proves he has no car control (as well as the other host.)

The only guy who can drive is Tanner, but the show tries to make you think they all can drive as good as him.

TANKERG 12-03-2010 05:57 AM

Also Tanner races some skiers. He drifts his Evo using the whole road which is obviously a closed course and then all of a sudden he gets stuck behind a truck???

When he finally gets on the slopes and happens to run into the skiers he makes a comment how they can get down faster because they can go straight down throught the trees, but what do you know, all the short cuts and straight lines don't work because now the skiers are jumping over Tanner's car. CRAP EDITING!!! I'm sure some of real Top Gear's if any of the races aren't real, but at least they seem like they might be and that they're just not a big advertisement for the car.

Just watch the british version and be happy.

9krpmrx8 12-03-2010 10:50 AM

I love it haha, of course it's produced, all TV is.

But any car show is a good car show as far as I'm concerned. Although I think it should be tanner and the guy he was on battle of the supercars with. The fat guy and the comedian are annoying.

But if we don't watch it then there will be no U.S. Top Gear and then what are left with?

If there was no USTG, then I'd be happy waiting for the real TG :)

I do think that American Stig is Paul Tracy, Tanner's cohost in Battle of the Supercars. Look how the guy sits behind the wheel.

9krpmrx8 12-03-2010 11:13 AM

Paul Tracy and Tanner are constantly dissing each other, much like the Brits. I don't think they will ever be up to par with the Brit show so they should just concentrate on making it interesting. I like the Battle of the Supercars show on HD Theatre.

battle of the supercars is pretty terrible as well

How could you call abusing a tuned Porsche and a tuned R8 terrible? Any chance to see a badass car flogged around a track is good to me. Besides, what car show is really good to a broad audience anyway?

The Reverend 12-03-2010 11:23 AM

that part is cool, they way they present the challenges as some sort of epic UFC battle is pretty lame tho

just be like okay were gonna do some 0-60-0 tests now and stop it with the stupid banter

Well it would be interesting to see Paul Tracy to lose it and put Tanner in a rear naked choke after losing though

I'm still trying to figure out how Tanner could teach a blind guy who never drove a stick in his life to drift *scratches head*

sephyobsessed 12-03-2010 11:35 AM

I honestly don't think that guy was blind. When the dog peed on the stage, he looked straight down at the floor and laughed at it. He looks around an awful lot for a blind person imo...

UrbanOcho 12-03-2010 11:36 AM

LOL!!! I forgot about that at the end!!!!! I think you nailed it Jess

9krpmrx8 12-03-2010 11:48 AM

I kind of doubted his blindness myself but....

I've heard nothing positive about the show thus far and haven't watched it. Maybe some day I will..

In other news, BBC IPlayer is going to be available in the US soon if it isn't already. Here's hoping they'll put proper Top Gear on it and we won't even have to mess with torrents!

L8tr 12-03-2010 04:08 PM

I thought I would really hate it, but I didn't. I usually don't like such exact copy type shows. Wouldn't be such an insult if they didn't act like they invented the Stig and such. Yes it's highly produced, and some shots are a joke, like the skiers jumping over. But it's not like everything in the UK version is totally real either. I don't care for the NJ accent guy much, but most of the little things don't really bother me. I'll probably always like the UK version more, but I don't watch every episode anyways.

UrbanOcho 12-03-2010 04:14 PM

I did get a good laugh out of the guide dog takin a whizz on the stage FWIW

Uhh... UK Top Gear is the biggest load of staged crap too. I haven't watched one episode of UKTG and not thought it wasn't incredibly staged. All Top Gear shows are completely staged, down to the drag races. They're filmed a certain way so that the shot looks pretty and narrated with something that's believable. IMO, even the Stig runs are clipped together from the many runs that he makes to make it appear more spectacular. Maybe someone can time the segment to see if it matches up with what they say it makes the run in.

I do agree that I think the other two hosts are like no namers that no one can make any connection with. Sure, the UKTG hosts are basically no namers to us in the beginning but you gather VERY quickly that they are three unique car crazies. (Yes, including captain slow, you can tell by the way he talks about some of those cars that he knows a crap ton about classic vehicles.) This part of the show probably bothers me more than anything, who the F are Adam Ferrara and Rutledge Wood?

Another problem is that a large amount of their viewer ship has already seen all the same films done overseas. The show is pretty damn good considering it's only in it's first two episodes. I'll let you download UKTG season one to remind yourself how bad those were. Keep watching, give them better ratings and hopefully they can get better hosts like Adam Corolla and more budget to do more imaginative films segments.

It may indeed. However, there is no apostrophe in the possessive "its."

TeamRX8 12-04-2010 01:12 AM

yeah, just like American iron Chef. Both are pathetic examples of desperate TV programming shows by producers and executives who are out of original ideas.

I disagree with Adam Corolla as a host. He's great on radio, but watching him talk with that stupid grin is hard to watch too.

If they were to edit the show in a way that looks somewhat believable would improve it 50 percent. In the first episode's race, the middle of the race was filmed close to sunset with the shadows getting long and the sky getting dark. By the end of the race it's nice and sunny again. And getting lost and driving through a cemetery? :Wconfused

Thank you for the correction. It's been duly noted.
