Drifting the RX8...issues?

So I took my car to a drift practice yesterday, ive drifted it before fine....but this time I had a little above a quarter tank. After I started to warm up doing figure 8's the car started losing power. Just like a fuel cut. Once second im sliding, the next the engine bogs down and no power. As soon as I lift off gas and try again I can slide until it happens again.

What would cause this issue? I went and got gas and filled her up but still had same issue. Is the stock fuel pump THAT weak?!?!?

Also I threw a oil light even though when I checked it i was topped off....

If the oil light came on, then it was probably the engine saving itself. Low oil pressure and low oil levels will cut power too. If the oil was topped off, then you might want to get the oil pump tested. I don't think it had anything to do with the fuel.

We'll need a little more history of your car/motor before we can even begin to help. Any why not post in the correct sub-forum?

Mileage on coils/plugs/wires?

Cause I know the NW people and they know my car. Plus its easy to ask friends I know whom race/drift their cars than strangers whom usually talk out their ass....sad but true.

About 3k. I just replaced with BHR ignition set in Late December. And new iridium plugs.

Car has 103k on it. Compress test at 96k was fine.

Anyone else know what would cause oil starvation if the oil is full?

What sub-forum did you want him to post in?

What sub-forum did you want him to post in?

Possibly the Troubleshooting section due to the nature of the question... just a thought.

gotcha

the fuel pump is weak. which direction were you turning when it happened or does it happen both ways?

both,

TANKERG 02-13-2012 08:35 PM

Then why the oil light?

dondo 02-13-2012 09:54 PM

sloshing around? I get that sometimes too on big bumps where the car lifts up a bit.

TANKERG 02-13-2012 10:15 PM

So my question is: can you have a fuel starvation event and the engIne not shut off?

I've had a fuel starvation event on the track, but that was caused by driving down to .5 gallons. The light was on, but the needle was artificially high because of the turns. The engine shut off due to a lack of fuel.

An oil starvation event cuts power, but does not kill the engine.

There are no baffles in the oil pan, so when pulling hard turns (Gs) it will slosh and the oil pickup wont be supmerged and get air.

In in other words...do I need new fuel pump? I am going supercharged anyway, if so which one? I heard denso is good....OR

Greddy baffled oil pan for only 320 bucks?

FazdaRX_8 02-14-2012 09:26 AM

Yes and yes

yeah you can have fuel starve without the engine shutting down

does greddy pan solve it? i'm still on the stocker.

FazdaRX_8 02-14-2012 03:11 PM

A person can weld in baffles, I need to look again but my new oil pan from my reman seemed to have a plastic one. Many people who autocross get new oil pans first for all makes and models. Infact I know a guy with an mz3 who autocrossed and oil starved the engine to bearing failure

dondo 02-14-2012 07:08 PM

hmm thats scary

Thats not a bad price its only a 54 dollar mark up from cost.

Here is description:

They also include specially designed interiors to keep the oil at the oil pump pick-up for engine reliability.
Also has two plugs for oil metter and for turbo lines already set up.
