1Jzgte Rx-8 Garage Swap

Soooooo I lost compression as per usual at 207,000km and picked up a 1jz gte twin turbo......

looked around like crazy for how to get these two together, nuthing zilch, nadda. well here it is :D lotta pics and explanations en route.

and..... STEP BY STEP :D

using the Rx-8 tranny (weak) butttttttt you wont need a custom drive shaft or cut up your tranny tunnel or firewall

This is cool but, I just don't see the RX8 trans lasting very long with that good ol' toyota 1JZ/2JZGTE engine torque keep the boost and mods close to stock I'm sure the first hard launch or aggressive 2nd-3rd pull will have the 8 trans screaming bloody murder. good luck man.

right so what you'll need
1jz motor and all the goodies to make it run,
1jz starter motor
1jz flywheel and pressure plate (I bought a full 3 piece kit off ebay) and tossed the 1j friction disc
Rx-8 friction disc luckily they are both 240mm or 9,1/2" :* beautiful I know
1j automatic flywheel!!! crazy right?
a 1/4" thick spacer 8 bolt spacer (will explain)
a custom extended pilot bearing 2,3/4 long with 1jz outer diameter (1,1/2") and rx-8 spline inner diameter (9/16")
and of course a custom adapter plate

step one was making a 5\8th adapter, I used ply wood just to create a template so don't kill me on that,,,, what's more important is that the spline shaft of the Rx-8 tranny is way to short :/

so I needed to bring the clutch assembly (flywheel/frictiondisc/pressureplate) closer to to the tranny and further onto the the Rx-8 spline shaft,, well I figured a spacer, but that brought the flywheel to far away from the starter. to fix this I attached an automatic 1jz flywheel to the motor then a 1/4" thick eight bolt hub spacer, then the 1jz flywheel Rx-8 clutch 1jz pressure plate. with this set up and a 5/8" tranny adapter I got full clutch to spline engagement but the Rx-8 spline shaft is left hanging my solution is a custom 2,3/4" long pilot bearing lol, and if so facto it all grabs up nicely

the pictures of the clutch show that the friction disc is fully mounted on the spline shaft when pressed against the mounted flywheel

the second picture of the clutch shows its necessary to move the clutch assembly forward to allow for the friction disc to just grab on to the spline shaft as you can see it just barely reaches,

Are you going to use the rx8 starter? if so why not just make a crank/flywheel spacer with your pilot adapter built in and cut down all that rotating mass.

Unfortunately because the pressure plate was so large in the housing it doesn't allow for the Rx-8 starter to fit so I'm going to use the 1jz starter from the block side so far I'm waiting on my machinist to finish my adapter pilot bearing and spacer lol then I can bolt it all together make adjustments and try to dry fit the assembled motor and tranny then its all about making the Rx-8 and 1j ecus work together lol

How about using an adapter to keep the 8 parts in the bell housing. you can get a after market 8 flywheel and not use the counter. bolt it all to your crank adapter, and use a fluid damper on the front side of the engine. Still cuts down the rotating mass.

I have built a few crazy swaps, i did the first lsx in a subaru, check my user name in youtube for vids. if I was doing this I would use the JZ to 350Z trans adapter. Better trans, less work, and the parts are ready available.

The rx8 5 speed gearbox is same fitment as the 6 speed and is stronger and has better ratios for a boosted engine ....Just sayin' ........

Iv'e been severely held up because I work mon-saturday so I only have Sundays and sick days to get work done, my brother pop'd his b18c1 motor in his civic so I have that in pieces and am rebuilding it but he wants to port polish replace the valve guides retainers ect a lot of work, and my girlfriend purchased a Porches 924 barn find (60,000km Parked for 14 years) and had to do the fuel lines break lines interior and try to tune the Air Fuel Ratio witch is still killing me.

as soon as its done im going for MOAR LOW for sure lol

Does the 1jz flywheel actually spigot onto the crankshaft or is it solely retained by the 8 flywheel bolts, if it doesnt locate on the crankshaft, you will have dangerous application.

well Cro8tia, the manual flywheel is not "Sigoted" but the auto flywheel and spacers are.
I used 8, 8.8 grade bolts were used and tightened to about 80ftlbs. so hopefully the assembly doesn't detonate lol ;P

Wish u all the best with the installation. :-)

I had the conversion to 1JZ-GTE VVTi last year, completed early of this year. Its auto transmission, didnt had the chance to go for manual.

Right now, im facing probelm with the car at low speed, keep jerking as if fuel cut, and wouldnt passed beyond 65km/h. Im taking my time investigating the issue.

Keep up with the good work, and keep posting on the progress. Thumbs up.

Thanks semrz1, sounds alot like a stability control issue almost like a "limp mode" are you using a manual or auto ecu,, also your 1jz ecu probably needs some sort of wheel speed sensor or tranny speed sensor :/

yea even un-modified my tranny had to be babied into gears,,, but it is what it is a short ratio with torque make a good couple, i know im going to have to rebuild the tranny bottom up,, Im just curious what usually breaks in the 6-speed box? forks? synchrony? gears them selves?

Yeah , just use the 5 speed to start with !
You get a taller 1st , 2nd, 3rd and 4th is 1:1 same as 5th on the 6 speed and fifth is
0.76 vs 0.84 .

Plus it's a stronger box that bolts straight in . I don't understand why you are even considering the 6spd .
