KL swap oprions

Ok I'm not sure how much can swap from the miata, but please don't flame for asking.

They sell a kl swap for the newest body mounts and all. But this swap uses the rx8 trans due to starter mounting location. I haven't heard anyone talk about it but I figured maybe someone might have info of what it may take. The easy choice for this motor is a pnp megasquirt , the KL-2-rx8 adapter . But would the miata mounts be useable by any chance ?

9krpmrx8 07-22-2014 09:51 AM

And why would you want this turd in an RX-8?

200.mph 07-22-2014 10:11 AM

op the best swap is an isuzu v6 from a rodeo with stock 300zx twin turbos

nlsolja123 07-22-2014 04:43 PM

There cheap. 100$ range. The later models were 175 hp , with megasquirt easy to get to 200 hp. Will handle boost easily. Some people are makeing 400 + on the kl g4 boosted ... They can be easily found, in a lot of 90s model mazdas/probe And Decent on gas

9krpmrx8 07-22-2014 05:13 PM

200HP peak at the flywheel with a shitty powerband. And boosted they are no more reliable than the Renesis.

FazdaRX_8 07-22-2014 05:15 PM

the KLZE/KLDE motor would be pretty cool. might not be as fast as the Renisis but it should last longer with better mpg. I think the better option is an s2000 motor.

just start surfing the web and look for pictures, like all engine swaps there will be custom parts involved, so you or someone you know should have those kinds of skillz

nlsolja123 07-22-2014 06:01 PM

My mx3 with a kf (170hp) with bolt ons I was getting around 32 mpg with a 4.40 gear. Yes I love the rotary but I'm starting to wonder what swaps are better for longevity. It would tleast be a Mazda with a Mazda heart instead of a Toyota lowered Mazda or Chevy powered Mazda. Heck the moats motor would be ok with me. But the v6 has more power than the bp (aside from mazdaspeed turboed) 200 flywheel whp vs 235 flywheel horsepower isn't much of a drop. And upgrades are easy power adders. Headers, throttle bodies. Should make decent power easily with a 8k rpm.

The main thing I was wondering is Will the miata (nc) subframe bolt to the rx8?

I put a KLDE in my sandrail and, although it was quick, it was no where near as fast as it should have been being a 1080lb vehicle with a v6 in it. I did look into it for my Miata as well as the 8. It'll require an adapter plate to fit a KL to anything.

My second choice in the 8 would be a SR20DET. 400hp is a cakewalk out of those.

User Claire_too was making swap parts for putting KL motors into na and nb Miatas. I actually owned a kit and was in the process of mocking up the car until I sold the project. The kits that exist now are for adapting the 5 and 6 speed na/nb Miata transmissions to the KL motor. They include a spacer for the flywheel, starter mount and bell housing adapter plate. I dont recall ever reading about the motor being swapped in the NC.

Also, the KL motors are fantastic. They are very stout and known to take a beating. They were used extensively in many variations of touring car racing. One of my favorite things about the KL engines is the sound they make when uncorked -- they sound extremely exotic.

EDIT: Yikes. I didn't realize this thread hadn't been touched in a month and a half.

Damn well since the seal is broken, I think a swap like that is going to be a bigger money pit then what has already been done the typical LSx and REW in the rx8 those are known to work with modifications and these aren't even that common! Has anyone even done the Isuzu swap? If not that means a whole lot of fabrication work and that shit ain't cheap! I have a friend doing a 01' LS1 into an s13 (which has been done many times not cheaply though for the average Joe, unless you got hook ups/connections.) for a track car told him to keep it simple use an s13, or FC do the basic stuff coilovers, seat, cage, and an engine swap preferably stock with intake/exhaust but nooo... had to be cool. He's in $20,000 he got headers and a bunch of other unnecessary mods and that's without the 5k he paid for the car all for a whopping 475whp which is good but he could have had a 1jz/2jz for half the price (2500, instead of 5000 for the ls1) with same power on a stock block with a haltech/adaptronic ECU would've only spent at most 10-15k max, not 25k+ just isn't logical to me I'd rather spend less money to do the same thing then more just to say i got an LSx/isuzuV6/other pointless/pricey engine swap even if you can smog still not a good enough excuse IMO oh but V8 parts are more abundant etc. racing especially drifting (he wants to do both) is extremely stressful on cars you're going to break stuff and it wont be cheap to fix either way lsx 1jz rew etc.

any who rant over!

9krpmrx8 09-04-2014 10:30 PM

Gotta pay to play. The KL is a turd and a horrible idea, the Isuzu V6 is a joke.

coreyhendo 09-05-2014 08:42 PM

The KL is not a turd, but wouldn't net anything other than arguably better reliability over the renesis.

9krpmrx8 09-05-2014 09:03 PM

The only KL worth a shit would be the Miller cycle supercharged KL (ZE or GE IIRC) and that would only be interesting because it is a different weird engine like the Rotary. Aside from that KL's are gutless. They do sound cool though at WOT with the right exhaust setup.

The Millenia S Miller Cycle engine is the KJ-ZEM and the KLZE is the high compression 200hp motor (we never got it here). The KL engines are great motors because of their split crankcase, forged crank and rods, etc. They do sound fantastic. Downside is their restrictive intake manifold that pioneered the variable runner length trend.

All that said, I wouldn't put one in an rx8 unless it was gonna be boosted.

9k - What's your engine of choice?

9krpmrx8 09-09-2014 02:00 PM

A turbo Renesis and a Honda B18C1 at the moment.

kickerfox 09-09-2014 02:38 PM

A B18 -almost- went into the sandrail but if I remember right it's reverse rotation.

I'm surprised you like Honda but don't like the 6VD1. The C30/32A/B are it's cousins.

9krpmrx8 09-09-2014 03:30 PM

I had few fast Honda's in my youth but my GSR is just a basically stock reliable daily driver with just under 200,000 miles on her. As for the 6VD1 and the C30 being cousins that does not mean a whole lot. Jenny McCarthy and Melissa McCarthy are cousins too

That's an awful analogy btw.

I'm actually in the middle of doing a KLDE V6 swap on a 8. It won't be balistic but similar power and a lot more torque. A much easier swap than any other engine and about the same cost to get a rotary rebuit. I'm using a 5 speed box from the 192 version as the ratios will suit the engine, RX8 flywheel and back to the rear wheels are standard, flywheel has been machined and adapter plate made, the crank pulley clears the subframe and steering rack. 2 small holes in the bulkhead for the engine heads and move the ABS forward.
I chose the easiest swap for the minimal amonut of work to do as I want to drive it sooner than a 5 year project and on a 2k budget. I'm doing all the work myself so hence why I can do it for cheap. I started the project 5 weeks ago and on target to be done at the end of October. I'm sure it will take longer as I've not used megasquirt ignition and injection before.

What's a 192 box? Are you keeping the stock final (diff) ratio?

In the UK we have a 5 speed version and 6 speed, the 5 speed is in the 192bhp car with slightly longer gears which is very comparable to the actual speeds as my MX6. It has the 4.44 LSD so all the homework has been done to do the least amount of work. In 5th, 75mph will see 3350rpm. Don't get me wrong, I love working out how to make an engine fit another car but I want to drive it this year. If everything works and I love the car then I'll rebuild my mock up engine, possibly turbo it, electrically driven..

No, it's still a dumb idea.
