GM V6 LLT Conversion

3 Attachment(s)
This is a prototype build using V8ROADSTERS parts. I have worked with them on The NC Miata platform and will use them for the LSV8 swap soon. Excited about the V6, the plan is to sort it out NA then convert to Twins as this motor make awesome power under boost. Few Pics to get it started.

What transmission are you going to be using?

tylerdurden 12-01-2013 11:52 AM

What's the reasoning behind going with this motor over an LSx?

Neat idea -

What have you learned regarding the steering rack and the hood clearance?
The front end of the stock RX8 trans is recessed quite a way under the cowl-
how close can you get the rear of the block to the stock RX8 bellhousing?
Do you think some firewall snipping will be needed to keep the eng/bellhousing
junction in the stock location?

Actuallllllllllly, doing the LS swap as well ;), will be staring that swap asap, but to answer the question. This V6 is bad ass. It will be replacing the supercharged LS motor in the Cadillac CTSV

The stock steering rack weighs in at 34+ lbs, its big, bulky and its gone. It did function well but,,, honestly it didn't steer any better/different than my LS swapped NC. More on what is needed for mounting coming, but the firewall stays intact.

Both the LS and the LLT clear the hood.

I have been doing the same engine swap for a while now, a bit here and there, what are you going to do about the oil pan,air con, alternator and steering . Sure ,you can mount the motor as high as you can to help clear the rack, but its going to handle like crap.

Fossilized..If one were to nip and tuck the firewall, you would have to remove the aircon and heater, the heater unit is about 2 inches behind the firewall but the piping is directly behind the right side head. If the High pressure fuel pump for the Direct injection was on the front of the left head instead of behind it, the motor would sit back almost another 4 inches. This motor is much taller than an Ls.

Also, to have the motor low and back into the firewall, you would have to remove a large portion of the oil pan which is cast ally, its not a problem to fab a modified pan, but theres not much room to have a decent capacity pan ,and the the bell housing would be around 2 inches from the ground. If the windscreen wasnt so deep it wouldnt be so bad.

So in your case which one is easier to do as far as making everything functional. v6 LLT or the v8 ls. The v6 looks bigger then the ls swaps. I think this is very very awesome keep us updated. I will be doing a swap but it won't be for another 7 to 8 years when I am more financialy stable. Only have 18k on my wankle.

At some point an oil pan will be developed to address capacity and depth. The stock one will suffice for now.

Not into large firewall mods, or any mods for that matter, that hinder the do it your-selfer garage swap from being completed.

As for the center of gravity= time will tell, parts removed so far are heavier than the ones going back on and some are completely removed. I think if the center of gravity does move, weight reduction is going to compensate.

The LS has much more swap history and for allot of folks it is the go-to engine. The latest generation of GM's V6's being rev happy, light, incredibly tune-able and fuel efficient are going to take off, its a flagship motor pure and simple.

If you're asking which motor is easier to swap??? Both/Neither, depends on what your after. Neither is really any harder than the other but both offer advantages and disadvantages. Me, with this car, I'm looking for a dependable daily driver that is reliably capable of 550 via turbo at a later date, with complete drive-ability. If I didn't have a swapped FD and NC I think I would be leaning towards the V8 RX8 though. After I'm done with the V6 I 'm thinking about offering a V8 build to someone at a reduced labor rate to verify all is well.

Drivetrain is mounted! And its back home! It looks right at home sitting in there. I'm taking the NC on the Hotrod Power Tour on the 7th of June but when thatvacation is is done I'll really get to work on this swap.

The short list:
  • Clutch line
  • ABS relocation
  • Radiator setup
  • Fuel line
  • Fuel pump upgrade
  • AC system
  • Finish interior
  • Gauges??
  • Shifter build
  • Air intake system
  • etc...
