Verifying Metering Oil Pump Operation

Hey all. I purchased an '05 with a blown engine and I'm about to start installing the new engine. I've been testing all the components and I've cleaned the MOP up...but is there a way to verify that the MOP works while it's off the engine? The spindle on the bottom of the MOP spins really easily...to the point that it doesn't feel like there's much occurring on the inside. Granted, the old OMP lines had oil in them so it was doing something.

Any insights would be appreciated.

hook it to a battery and see if it works.

Thanks for the reply Cayman, but I'm interested in the portion of the pump powered by the "driving worm" (I called it a spindle in the original post). And based upon my reading of the epic OMP thread I'm coming to the conclusion that there's not a good way to test it and I'm probably being paranoid.

Very rare for them to fail mechanically. It's usually the hoses themselves that fail. Install it and make sure oil is in the lines after running the car.

If the oil metering pump is not operational, the ecu will detect an issue and put the car into limp mode and set a MIL. I don't know of a way to test it off the vehicle unfortunately. I can tell you that the rotational cam portion will freewheel when you move it by hand. Nothing abnormal there.

nope, there’s no flow detection on any any of the output hoses. Without that it can be nonfunctional without being detected due to any number of reasons

speaking of which, do you still have that old busted one we discussed?

and no, you can’t just hook up a battery to it; better watch out for that ditch ...

Yes I have it, all boxed and ready to go. I'll have to bring to it work and ship it that way. Being in and out of the hospital and working two jobs has really cut into my life. Seems the only day off I ever have is on Sunday. I'll find time this week to ship it while I'm at work and pm you the tracking number.
