Temperature gauge and A/C
 

Hello, I am a new member to this site. However, I have done a lot of research on these forums in the past for my rx8. I have had it for 8'months and have not had any major problems.

There is a couple things that I am concerned about though. First off, my A/C blows hot air and then cold air after a while, but then turns hot again. And it does that the whole time I have my A/C ON. I'm thinking I might just need to recharge my AC.
But, then there is also my temperature gauge. The pointer stays in the middle for a while and then starts turning to the hot end of the gauge and then drops down to the middle, and it does this continuously.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A/c most likely needs a recharge and have you checked your coolant levels? And when is the last time you flushed your radiator

Wow man be very careful if your temp gauge goes past half way you are almost certainly causing permeant damage to your engine. Check out the cooling threads.

Your ac system cuts off when the coolant temps gets too hot. If your car gets so hot that your ac goes hot then you should shut it down immediately. And i mean immediately.

To test your ac system there is a thread around that tells you how to check your ac temp knob. If it is a ac problem thats the first thing you should check.

Flush your coolant use a mix of abt 70/30 coolant. Make sure your under-trays are in place, make sure there are no gaps around the radiator if there are fill them in with foam of any sort that will stay.

Have you had any ac work done or tried adding coolant? If you have you could have over-pressurized the system and be causing your engine to overheat as a result.

Also check the operation of the fans.

I went to a local shop and they put a new cap.
My fans are working. Thermostat is also working.
They didn't find any leaks.
The car is running pretty good right now, AC is running normal (cold).
The only thing now is that my ENGINE COOLANT LIGHT keeps coming on and off.
But I'm not too worried since my temp gauge is staying steady in the middle

Intermittent A/C problem (blows hot/cold)
 

Going to jump into this thread, since my '05 is having a similar problem, minus the engine temp issues (as far as I know, though I'll investigate further). If anybody prefers me to create a new thread though I will. FYI my mom drives this car, so my info is based on her feedback.

She told about a week ago that the A/C was starting to intermittently blow warm air, although when I pressed her about it tonight she said that it actually started about a month ago, though at first she thought she must've just bumped the button on the A/C controls. It wasn't until a couple weeks ago that she realized something wasn't right, when the intermittent problem became more frequent and more prolonged when it would occur. At this point, the A/C might work fine for a little while (could be a half hour or an hour), then start blowing warm, then goes back to working properly again. The period of time it blows cold/warm seems to vary somewhat randomly.

She took it to a shop today and they checked some things, but apparently didn't have the proper equipment to fully test everything, so they pointed her to another one of her shops which she's going to go to tomorrow or Monday. They did check the Freon and confirmed it was fine with no leaks, and they checked the temperature which was at 40 degrees I believe. It was working properly when she got there, but while he was test driving it, it started blowing warm again. He told her it could be the relay (I don't know enough about AC systems to know what he's referring to), but apparently he checked that and it wasn't the problem. When she arrived he said it wasn't the condenser, but by the time she left he thought it might be, but he wasn't particularly confident.

I don't have enough experience with A/C systems to know all of the parts involved and what the likely culprits could be. It's blowing fine, whether it's warm or cold, so it's not a blower/fan issue. I've tried to do some searching here, but it's taking 5+ minutes to display the search results at the moment for some reason, so I'll have to try that again later. Any advice, prior to getting it back to the shop for more thorough testing, is appreciated. I'll also ask her about the engine temps, though she would've told me if she'd noticed it getting hot. At least she can watch that more carefully the next time she drives it and see if there's a correlation If there's a switch that automatically turns off the A/C when the coolant reaches a certain temp, that could possibly be the culprit. Btw, it's got a brand new radiator and coolant overflow (both less than a year old). We're in So-Cal, and the temps have been high here the last month, in the 90's on most days, so if the coolant level was low for some reason, the ambient temps could definitely be a contributing factor.

Sure 5 miniutes for a search. More like you did a 5 min search. Try this and see if it works. If the Diagnoses reads 0-16 consistantly with no problems it could be other issues, but That is the first thing to do.
