SOHN Adapter - What's your oil?

To those who have made the switch from 4 cycle to 2, what's your preferred oil and operating climate? Has anyone found that synthetic 2- cycle with it's protective additives causes the same buildup on the seals that an OMP Adapter aims to prevent?

Royal purple 2-C? Castrol 2T Conventional? Ipone Snow Racing 2T?

You want a JASO FC or FD rated oil. Some of the chainsaw/outboard/snowmobile stuff leaves deposits or doesn't survive the heat of the engine (full disclosure: that's what I've gathered from the oil specs, I don't really take my engine apart every day to check each type of oil's effects).

I've run synthetics: Protek-R, Klotz Techniplate, Lucas Synthetic, Motul 800.
Most premium synthetic 2-stroke oils are ester-based, which burn clean.

Can i use idemitsu premix on a sohn pump in separate tank

BigBadChris 09-11-2015 06:21 PM

That's exactly what I do. Ifemitsu Premix in its own container, feeding directly to the Sohn. I also add it to the gas tank every fill up. I'd rather replace a clogged fuel filter sock then risk a new engine. (No, there is no proof the premix can prevent engine failure. But I feel better doing it)

Idemitsu premix isn't strictly speaking a 2-cycle oil. If I'm mistaken someone please correct me, but a premix product counts on the fuel that It's mixed with to be the base of the mixture. Running unmixed premix through the OMP might not offer enough lubrication for the pump itself and cause failure?

That being said I've never run Idemitsu, does it offer the same weight as a regular 2-cycle?

Excellent questions. It is a fuel soluble lubricant. It is very thick and very slippery. I would be stunned if it didn't offer sufficient lubrication to the pump.

I have been running mineral-based Castrol 2T through my sohn for about 50,000 miles. The engine has 110,000 miles total and has never flooded or not started.

A good friend of mine has run Lucas Semi-Synthetic 2 Cycle JASO FC FD for the last 90K miles. He has 120K on his original engine and tracks his car regularly. For that reason, I run the same oil as premix.
