Smoke, please help
 

I bought A used 04 RX8 with 120,000 miles, the car runs great 90 percent of the time, but if I run the car above 5k rpm for an extended period of time the car starts smoking real bad. Once I drop the rpm's down for a lit While it quits smoking all together. I would say I have to run the rpm's up for a couple miles before it happens. I've bee Reading through tech section for days but can't find anyone with them same symptoms. Any info would be great.

We need some more info to help out. Where is the smoke coming from? Out of the hood or from the exhaust? What are you coolant temps like? Does the stock needle move past the middle? Do you have tourque or some other OBDII way of monitoring temps? Is the oil overfilled? I would stop revving the car in this manner until this is solved, you may be doing damage.

It is definitely from the exhaust, coolant temps are staying in normal range and the factory needle is not passing middle. This has happened twice. It smells like oil and no the oil isn't over full.

The first time it happened was 3 weeks ago about 8k rpm's and it caused a miss while it was smoking. But driving it easy for about a mile put everything back to normal until today. And the first time it happened the smoke was extremely bad.

Does it cause a misfire every time? A flashing CEL is always a misfire. Are you running catless?

Only caused a miss fire the first time when it smoked really bad. And yes catless. I ran torque a little bit ago and got a p2004 code. If that helps

Maybe there is a lot of oil pooled in places such as the SSV, intake manifold, or accordion hose. I wonder if you were to remove the oil filler neck section connected to the intake manifold and accordion hose if you would find a lot oil.......I might hazard a yes guess

You may also want to look into your ignition components.
Your internals may be caked in carbon, so either decarbon it or drive it hard a few times but before that get the codes read.

I had similar issue a while back with my 04..I replaced the coils with BHR kit + fresh plugs + wires to be on the safe side.. Gutted cat and redline the shit out of itt a few times..
I had my cel blinking, but knowing i had brand new bhr kit i wasnt really worried, when cell comes on i let of throttle till it stops flashing.. then after a min of normal driving redline it again..

After a few attempts my car ran much better and no cell, my conclusion was that carbon was cleared out :-)

This is why I asked if his oil was overfilled. Typically the accordion tube in front of the throttle body sucks up oil if the oil is overfilled, and that oil gets sucked into the engine causing the smoking.

Catch can only a breather hose and run high rpm's for a while. Now it seems to have cleared out. What I did learn is that if I drive the car in the rain with the new AEM cold air intake, the filter gets wet and the engine starts sucking a large amount of oil through the vent hose from the oil filler neck. Thanks for all the advic.
