Should I accept a dealer charge for a warranty engine replacement?
I have a 2007 Mazda RX8 that recently flooded and had a compression test done that led to a warranty claim on a replacement engine. The dealer indicated that the cost would be $85 due to required diagnostic testing for the claim and battery recharging (I had drained it with the cranking). Is this a legit charge or should I argue it?

The warranty covers the diagnostics / diagnosis charges to determine that it failed.
The warranty wouldn't cover "recharging the battery", but it would cover the compression test.
A charge for recharging your battery is stupid, even if they did actually recharge it. More likely they just let the alternator recharge it.

Niteshade gives good advice. If all they want is $85, go for it. That's outrageous for a battery charge. But dealers often insist on replacing a bunch of other stuff along the way, usually adding up to $500 or more. $85 is well spent if it keeps them friendly enough to not add all that.
Just make sure they disclose, in advance, whatever else they might want to add along the way.

That's bogus to charge a battery you can charged get for free at Auto zone wow.
Rap with the service manager to discuss your unhappiness. Or calls the customer service 800 number and complain. Be nice and don't mention it till the end because you might get jacked.

All diagnostic work that leads to a warranty repair, is covered as part of that warranty repair, and Mazda Corporate reimburses the stealership for labor on all warranty repairs (albeit at a reduced rate, as they only pay the estimated labour time, instead of the "tech taking his sweet f-ing time" rate the delaer charges customers... so technically the dealer is "double dipping"both corporate AND the customer for warranty labour...
Think about it....

Yeah....I think we all knew that through the discussion. But the dealer could pull other things to run up an even bigger tab. Like insist on new plugs and coils at dealer list price. It's like going through customs in a third world country: just be happy when the special fee is modest.

I would look at $85 as a steal, pay it and run. Hell of a deal for a new engine, both of my rebuilds in my 7 & 8 were @ $5k each.
Good luck I hope that is your final total but I doubt it they are going to find something.

if all they want is 85 bux then go for it
but a shady dealership like this will probably wanna rip u more down the road ... next thing I know they might give u bs like oh new plugs and coils and wires and decab blah blah blah and gives u a bill of 2-3K
so if I were u, im gonna start searching for new oem coils, plugs and wires first. just so that when they wanna insist u gotta "use new stuff, otherwise no engine" u can hand it to them and be like "here, use these, brand new"
