S1 or S2?

Ok, so im looking into getting another 8 and im not sure whether to go with an s1 or s2? I haven't seen too many aftermarket parts for the s2. Though i own an s1 so i don't look for s2 parts. Just looking for opinions on the s2 vs s1. I like the look of the s1 better but am not sure which one is overall better. Opinions?

S2 is better in just about every way. Looks of course, are subjective.

RIWWP 08-08-2014 11:41 AM

The S1...
  • Is cheaper
  • is less reliable
  • might have some engine warranty left

The S2...
  • Is more expensive
  • is more reliable
  • will have engine warranty left

As far as mods, the number of items that are only available for the S1 and not the S2 is shrinking. I personally can only think of 1 item that is S1 only at this point (the SOHN adapter), though I expect that there are more.

I believe the Accessport will only work with S1's as well. Correct me if i'm wrong.

RIWWP 08-08-2014 01:49 PM

Correct, however MazdaEdit can do everything the AccessPORT can do, and MazdaEdit works with both S1 and S2 (and it's cheaper)

I think the engine upgrades to the SII alone make it the better pick.

Lol this single post has made me feel so much better about my purchase.

The S2 cars had a host of reliability upgrades performed by Mazda, S2=less headache (speaking as an S1 owner).

SpaceCaptainSteve 08-08-2014 04:52 PM

When I bought my first RX8 a few weeks ago I was looking for the S2 solely because of the oil injection changes in the engine that I read about on these forums.

When I was just learning on day 1 (first manual) I stalled quite a few times in quick succession and never flooded the engine.

There is really no reason to get an S1 over an S2. Unless you don't care about reliability or warranty coverage. The upgrades to the S2 are numerous.

Search noob.

if you are considering a second rx8 rather than replacing your current one, i must suggest a FD.

9krpmrx8 08-09-2014 12:26 AM

You would be better off throwing your money in a hole in the ground and setting it on fire.

superdan50 08-09-2014 12:35 AM

both being maintained properly, stock to stock, comparing apples to apples as much as possible (obviously age difference), the 13b-rew is more reliable than the s1 renesis (cant speak much to the s2).

9krpmrx8 08-09-2014 12:46 AM

The FD had just as many problems as the RX-8 if not more. It even had the same issues with shitty remans from Mazda too. I know plenty of FD owners and none of them are on the original engine regardless of mileage.

superdan50 08-09-2014 01:11 AM

how many were stock?

jon15805 08-09-2014 04:19 AM

sweet deal. I'm guessing this is why it is so hard to find an S2 on craigslist lol. thanks for the info. I knew there were a lot of upgrades done by Mazda but wanted to hear from some people that have had an S1 and an S2.

None. I have never met an FD owner that left them stock. My buddy did just buy a mint a CY FD but he also has a Supra, R35 GTR, and a 20B Turbo RX-8 so the FD won't stay stock for long, his cars never do.
