rx8 wknt turn on.
Ok so I broke my radiator by jacking it up under it when I was trying to change the oil. I was doing this at my dads auto shop so after I broke the radiator I just moved it without turning it on because I was scared it would get hot and mess up the engine. The next day my dad told me to turn it on and move it so I did it real quick. The next day the new radiator came in and I turned the car on and put it in the shop real quick before it would start to get hot. I changed the radiator and while doing that I cleaned off the crankshaft positioning sensor with some brake cleaner then rubbed it with a paper towel. After I put it back together I changed the oil and I put very little amount of oil in the oil filter since this car has the filter on ttop of the engine which was going to drop most of the oil. I tried to turn it on but it just cranks. It doesnt try to turn on it just cranks. I tried to see of it needed a deflood so I did the fuel pump fuse thing and the gas ti the floor and taking all the spark plugs out but it just doesnt try to turn over. Me and my dad pushed it down a hill while he tried to turn it on but I just saw smoke coming out and it didnt turn on. I dont know what to do now please help.

Its a 2004 rx8 with 131, xxx miles and its manual

Hi, if you are sure it's not flooded, you might check for a vacuum leak. Just replacing the radiator shouldn't have done anything unless you forgot to hook something back up, or accidentally knocked something loose.
If you had no issues prior, it seems something happened while you were working on it. Your starter could be weak, but if you had no problems with it before you worked on it, it would seem unlikely. Did you have a CEL? If your ignition is system is faulty it will flood easier and might make it harder to get started. |
A vacuum leak won't prevent it from starting, there is no air flow control or measurement on start.
It is just likely flooded, pull the spark plugs and crank the engine, see if fuel comes out. If it's flooded though, it's flooded for a reason. Low compression, failing ignition, weak battery, or dying starter. I'm going to assume for the moment that you at least had some coolant in the engine when you moved it, or that it wasn't on long enough for the engine block itself to start warming up. |
The reason I dont think its flooded is because the engine doesnt try to turn. It just cranks forever amd the youtube videos where their engine is flooded it turns over but not on but mine doesnt turn over
|
Ok, you are confusing terms.
You say "doesn't try to turn" as well as saying "cranks forever". These both mean the same thing. Cranking is the engine turning over. Here is the list of exactly what happens when you are starting the car, go down the list and tell me exactly how far you get: The process is: 1: Key in 2: Clutch in 3: clutch sensor closes the circuit allowing start 4: Key to start 5: Starting relay opens, providing power to the starter from the battery 6: Battery power cranks over the starter motor 7: Starter motor spins the engine through the flywheel 8: Ignition opens 9: Coils get power, begin generating spark current 10: Wires transmit the current to the plugs 11: Plugs begin to spark 12: Fuel pump begins pumping 13: Engine standard compression and combustion should occur |

Anyways make sure you have all the sensors plugged back in. A rad swap is a rather large job on an RX8. Lots of stuff to unplug and all, easy to forget to put back together. That under tray can be a biotch sometimes. |
I dont know if all that is happening it just cranks and doesnt even go to 1000 rom when cranking. And it was kinda dark where I was changing the oil because the shop was full at the moment so I had to change it outside the shop. Im about to check the crankshaft sensor see if it got unplugged. I dont think I forgot to connect something because when it didnt turn on I removed everything to double check for something I might of forgot to plug in.

are you sure you reconnected the crank sensor? Mil coming on or flashing at all? |
It is cranking at like 250 but on the unflooding videos there rpms go higher and mines barely moves. The check engine light blinks when I crank it a lot.
|
If the check engine light blinks, its a misfire...
|
But why would the misfire not let it turn on
|
Do you understand what a misfire is?
Lacking fundamental knowledge of something you're trying to fix is risky. You should pay someone to work on your car if you do not understand this basic concept. |
I dont really know what it is and it has had a misfire on cylinder 2 but why would changing the radiator and the oil not make it start.
|
Make sure the sensor is plugged back in...check anything wiring related you could have screwed up by mistake...
If all is good...get someone to pull you at about 10mph..and carefully let out the clutch in 2nd gear ( key on ;) ) and give it gas when it trys to start to keep it going....keep it rev'd up when it strts till it will idle on its own.....unhook tow rope and go and give it a drive to clean itself out You might want to check out the coils/wires/plugs if they haven't been changed in a while......it shouldn't flood that easily |
I tried that at the beginning when me and my dad pushed it down a hill and all that happened was smoke coming out and thats it
|
Smoke means it was firing and trying to start...need more speed and longer... that's why you need to tow it.
|
Can you explain why it needs more speed and distance and the new camshaft sensor replacement didmt work.
|
You need more engine speed, so if you push or pull start it, you need to get it a bit faster, or you need to have it spinning for longer.
|
Compression is dynamic on a rotary...faster rotation means better sealing
So faster means better compression and more likely to start :) The reason the new sensor didn't help is likely because the old one was not the problem :) |
I changed the sensor because Ive always had that misfire on cylinder 2 for some odd reason and like the shift knob would shake a lot and the check engine light would blink when I drove it hard. And im pretty sure that it clogged upmy catalytic converter since the computer shows that up to. Maybe I need to find the reason to this but im kind of short on cash so I switched the coils to see if those are causing the misfire but it didnt turn on after that but for a second when I moved the car. Does anyone know how I can check for the misfire in any other way.
|
Make sure things are hooked back up correctly and then try and start it....
If you know how...check the ignition and fuel pressure..but it is likely flooded...... If the CAT is fubarred it should still start if you pull it...just be careful that it doesnt decide to catch on fire from all the fuel that is likely going to be in it |

Fix it, or stop driving till you can. You probably aren't successful with push starting because your car can't fire the mixture anyway. |
^ LOL...still think it's just flooded ;)
