Check out these coils

I'm in Germany and I have a 2005 RX8 5 speed. That's weird on it's own. I was having starting problems and it has a rough idle so I decided to change the starter, had the original, and change out the plugs, wires, and coils. Got the upgraded starter and OEM everything else.

Here's the original starter, just a little burnt up lol.

New OEM coils

And this is what I found when I went to change them.

I figured they were just weird coils the previous owner put on but the connector is different. It has 4 prongs inside not 3 like the US spec ones have. Not sure why Mazda changed it for the Euro spec 8's. Pretty crappy though bc buying the coils from any auto parts store over here is like €60 a piece. For a little more I could upgrade to BHR coils but then they wouldn't even fit :/

Those are D585 coils...and they look like a BHR Kit and brackets

If you want to go back to stock...plug in the OEM coils into the stock plugs after you remove the patch harness

Yep. That is a BHR kit with its D585 coils, mounting bracket, and wiring harnesses.

Thats really surprising, I didn't think any of that was actually changed by the look of the plugs. Im not sure if I should go back to stock or not though. The car runs a million times better than before but it developed a ticking noise in the higher rpms that I never noticed before. The ticking isn't present in neutral so I have no clue what that could be.

Here's a pic of the plugs, explains the rough idle.

I think I'd rather go back to stock. Highly doubt that they are BHR coils so they probably need to be replaced anyways. I need to go look at it again but the dies the patch harness connect into the original connectors or does it replace the original one and I'll have to get a OEM harness?

No you won't need a new harness, just unplug the patch connectors and the stock coils will plug in.

And yep, that's a BHR kit. You should test the coils (there is a DIY here and it's easy). or you could just buy new D585 coils and slap them. Or you could ship the kit to Charles for "refreshing". That rust is crazy.

And if those are Ebay OEM style coils I wouldn't bother.

Oh and get a Series II starter (2009+ Manual 6 speed starter)

The only thing i see weird about the coils after looking at them is the allen head screws used, mine look different but he could have used different hardware over the years since he has sold thousands of these.

I agree with 9K. That is definitely a BHR kit. Mine has those same screws. Test the coils, and if they are good, take a wire brush to the metal parts and hit them with high temperature paint.

If the new coils you bought were inexpensive, the price was probably too good to be true. There are a lot of fake coils on the market, and they will bring you nothing but heartache if you ended up with some. The fact that they are loose in the box is often a good clue.

Why is there so much rust and corrosion in that engine bay in general?

.

I got the 13 tooth one off of amazon for $85, I looked into the Series II ones but they're way more expensive. I can't imagine it starting any better.

I'll test the coils in the next day or two When I get some free time. How would I go about shipping it to Charles?

I had my wife grab the coils from autozone or Advanced and ship them back to me while she was in the states so they shouldn't be fakes. They weren't loose like that, I took the bubble wrap and packing paper out of the box for the picture.

I'm not sure why there's so much rust and corrosion, probably bc of the German winters. I just picked it up a few weeks ago and am still in the process of cleaning everything up. it just takes forever to get parts out here so it's a slow process.

One thing to check is if the BHR kit was properly grounded. The kit has a long wire thats meant to connect to a body grounding point. In fact, you might want to find that grounding point and clean out any rust on the contact surface. Could be that simple.

It starts about 50 RPM better when comparing it to my new 2KW updated Series I starter. I have one. This a pic of the two (not mine) side by side.

Well not Mazda fakes but still aftermarket. The OEM mazda coils were improved twice, the latest version being "C" coils. The aftermarket coils have been the same for 10 years so likely based off the version "A" coils from Mazda.

I'll probably end up taking everything out tomorrow depending if I get out of work before the suns down. I already swapped the plugs and wires and it's running really smooth now, it does have a weird tick at higher rpms while in gear though.

Is it not true that the reputable aftemarket coils are made by Mazda's OEM supplier? I think it is, and Intermotor is the middle man on the supply. I have read people reporting receiving B coils more recently, and someone even posted having received C coils from Autozone. We may have finally worked through all of the A supply, through at least some of the B supply, and are finally seeing some C coils available in the aftermarket.
