Rx8 sounds like it’s free spinning.
Hey guys new here. Just got my rx8 a few weeks ago. Today I’ve came across a problem I don’t want to jump to the conclusion that it’s blown up but it probably is. Well last night before I got out of my car I revved it up and it died. Didn’t think anything of if. Got in my car this morning and tried to start it and all the starter would do was kick one time. Tried multiple time and nothing I finally plugged up my jump box thinking it was the battery and still nothing. Well after a few tries it eventually started to turn over but still wouldn’t start and eventually started the kicking once again. Well I took the battery to have it charged and put it back in the car starter still just kicking one time then finally started turning over. Well finally I got the car to start but it was running terribly I tried to keep it running so I was revving it up and it was going up in the rpms very slowly and I finally let off the gas and it died. Tried to restart it and now it sounds like the motor is just free spinning?any help?its blown up right? |
Which year? AT or MT?
Did you load test your battery? Shops can do it for free. Just want to eliminate a possible factor. If your battery passes the load test, check your ignition components. That include spark plugs, the wires, and ignition coils. Any coils that are not the Revision C OEM coils or good aftermarket options(BHR, SakeBomb, etc.) should be immediately pulled and damned to hell. If your ignition components are toast, might want to pull the catalytic converter to check it as well. Oh, and did you get a rotary-specific compression test before your purchase? |

2004 6 speed. Battery fully charged. Im gonna check spark plugs and what not hopefully in the morning dont want to give up om this car its my dream car and have only had it like 3 weeks lol i think everything is stock on it except a cold air imtake If you don't have any proof that the ignition components are changed before, do it now. People got their cars burnt down because the bad coils fail to ignite the fuel, the unburnt fuel clogs the cat, which overheats and starts a fire. 2004 and early 2005 models have a weak starter, so you can consider upgrading to a 06~08 starter(better) or a 09~11 starter(even better). Unless the CAI in question is an AEM/Mazdaspeed or REVi(which kinda looks like the stock one, actually), toss it and get a stock intake system from a junkyard. The stock intake is really good on this car and the only ones that are better are the two options I mentioned, and even then the difference is negligible. But yeah, compression test. Did you do it? Big mistake if you didn't. |

The kicking over 1 time thing sounds like bad battery, bad starter, or poor electrical connection between the 2. As stated above, get the battery tested on a load tester to eliminate the first. Clean the terminals and inspect the wiring for the 2nd. What other maintenance has been done on the car? Are the ignition coils under 30,000 miles since last change? Did you have a compression test done when you bought the car? |
Same issue
I was coming on here to post the exact same thing. I recently cleaned the cat, new plugs, wires, coils and cleaned the ssv.
2004 Mazda rx8 6spd stock. Died about 10 feet from my driveway and I'm experiencing the exact same issues as the original poster. I pulled the plugs, front rotor plugs are black and damp. Rear plugs are a dry brown. Tested the coils and wires with a multimeter and tested good. I haven't put it back together yet. It has a redtop optima in good health and I'm putting in a 2kw starter in the next few days since mine engages for about a second and then spins. |
