Rebuilt Engine
We had a new engine put into our 2004 RX8 due to a cracked casting. Any idea of what they actually do? Just replace the engine casting or put in a whole new engine? Thanks.

Why don't you ask the people who did it? If it was a dealer it would have been a remanufactured unit.
|
There are no new Renesis engines available for purchase. The only way to build a new engine would be to build it buy buying all new parts from Mazda which would cost about $8000.00 give or take, and that is about what a new 09-11 engine ran brand new (can't get them anymore either).
As for what was replaced in your engine, well without knowing who did it, it's hard to say. But as ZiG mentioned, if it was a Mazda dealer then a reman engine was installed and your old engine was used as a core to be sent back to the reman factory. |
Unfortunately you leave us a little in the dark. Who installed it? What did "They" tell you? I mean, the guys pretty much have stated all the questions we need to know to tell you things. Mazda reman engines seem to be very hit or miss, more miss than anything else from my farvewing observers status. That doesn't mean they are all bad, just some worse than others. I mean - At a minimum a rebuilt engine consists of new seals and a hell of a lot of cleaning, port checking, making sure shit's not going to bind and will spin correctly.

The engine was installed by a Mazda dealership. By their mechanic who knew the most about RX8's. The cost ran around $3000.
|
Then you got a Mazda reman engine and your old engine was sent back to Mazda as a core. Dealers are not allowed to tear down engines.
|
Thanks
Thank you for the information. Appreciate the help

Rebuilt engine
We are trying to sell the car and one of the questions being asked is how long they can expect the car to last. Any ideas? It has a new engine, are there any other items that might go next on a 93k millage rx8?

If it's a 2008 or newer, it could still be under the 8 year/100,000mi engine warranty. |
Are the coils expensive to replace? Is it a do it yourself project?

Thanks, I had replaced spark plug wires before but not coils. Will do this for my next weekend project.

If it's a normal Mazda dealer I would say they replaced the engine complete. No normal Mazda dealer has the knowledge about the rotary

Where did you go SPECIFICALLY to get one done for $3000?? Everything near me looks more like 4-5K for a motor.

9krpmrx8,
My fault...completely forgot about RR...They are in the same town as my wife's aunt and uncle too...lol. I'll probably be using them when mine goes. |
I had mine done by Kevin at Rotary Resurrection this June. He did a fantastic job and we just finished reinstallation and it is working great. He sends tear-down photos and then offers options for the rebuild and parts replacement and then rebuild photos. We replaced the rather worn housings and the engine is running great after less than 100 miles. We still have a few other things to work on (non-mechanical), but we are tickled with the engine and the rebuild by RR.

mibsy,
have any pics you can post of your build?...would love to see what they did |
