R3 RX8 5th Gear Syncro
 

I have an R3 RX8 owned from new with a FSH, serviced & MOTd two weeks ago. It's only got 38000 miles on the clock and it would appear that the 5th Gear Syncro has just gone ie it will graunch when running in idle and you gently push into 5th, good syncros will not allow you to select without depressing the clutch. Double clutch when driving and it's fine.

Q1 Has anyone had the same?
Q2 Has anyone written to Mazda re a claim outside of warranty?
Q3 Any advice
Q4 Any good gearbox repair agents in Surrey or Hampshire?

I could understand 1st 2nd or 3rd but 5th is not acceptable with only 38000 miles!!

You should be under warranty. Powertrain warranty is 5yr 60,000 miles.

Most syncro problems are with the series 1 RX-8, series 2 is far better. About the only reason syncros usually fail short of ~100k is bad driving habits or using the wrong transmission fluid. Royal Purple will shred our syncros within 10,000 miles, for example.

Take it to a dealer and ask about warranty coverage, you should still have it.

No not driven hard at all, if it had it would have been the lower gears taking the punishment. 5 Years old 40 miles a day 225 days a year stuck at 60 mph and only 38000 miles.

That should be the worldwide warranty, checking.

Note that I didn't say "driving hard". You can drive hard and be easy on the transmission, and you can drive like a granny but still be hard on the transmission. Bad habits in this case could easily occur even when taking it easy.

Looks like UK has a "new car warranty", 3yrs 60,000 miles, not sure what all it covers. Says to refer to warranty booklet for your car only.
