Possible dead 04 rx8. Coil Pack problems!
 

Hi there. So I picked up my 8 from the body shop this morning reverting it back to its former glory, got 20 minutes down the road and its conked out and wouldn't start again. took it in to a mazda dealer who has said that one of the coil packs has gone and that to replace all 4 of them and the leads it will cost £1000! On top of that apparently its not guaranteed that the coil that went wrong has done internal damage so if they are replaced it still might need loads more work.

Just wanted to see what you guys think of his diagnosis and whether it is worth me trying to change the coils myself???

Yes, it's worth changing the coils yourself. I don't know what parts stores you have there, but the dealer price is about comparable to the US dealers that try to steal your wallet.

Over here, dealer will happily charge $800 to $1,600 USD to replace coils, plugs, wires. However, we can buy the same coils from Mazmart (forum vendor) for $250 total, plus $80 plugs and $60 wires. Or we can buy an older revision coil from the local auto parts store for $190 for all coils, plugs and wires.

Replacing them takes 2 sockets, a screw driver, a ratchet, and a few extensions... and about an hour if you don't know what you are doing. If you give me a website link for one of your local auto parts stores over there, I'll track down which coils to get as long as they have an online catalog/store/whatever.

Save yourself the money and learn something in the process by doing it yourself.

Is he right in saying that even if i change the coils and the plugs/wires there is still the chance that more damage has been done when one coil went?

It's technically possible. But not something I would panic over. One thing at a time.

The notes say "quantity 4", so I don't know if that means "4 are needed" or "this listing contains 4". Obviously it makes a big difference between 400£ for all 4 (which seems absurdly high given the exchange rate) or 99£ for all 4. You might want to get clarification on that before ordering.

Even at 99£ each, that's still 40% of what the dealer wants to charge.

For £100 if that is the case, I'm definitely willing to give it a go. Thanks for the link, i don't suppose it matters that my 8 is an 2004 and it says that that particular coil is for an 05?

Nope :)

All 2004-2008 model year RX-8s use the same coils. In the US, it's all 2004-2011 RX-8s, but I think in some other regions there is an ECU check for 2009-2011 for a specific coil type (revision C coils). Even if you DO run into that though, the car is still safe to drive, the coil internals are still the same. Just the ECU would be complaining about not already being friends with them.

last thought sorry. Im guessing it would be a good idea to change the plugs and wires while I'm there. do these need to be specific to the coils?

Yup, re generally recommend changing all the plugs, coils, and leads at the same time. Changing only one piece usually means rediagnosing a week or two later to figure out which one failed next.

Ive been looking into coils also I found out Mazda made a new coil to replace there original could cause they had problems with them the item number is N3H1-18-100C the originals are 100b these replacement coils are expensive though

A Hint.

I talked to someone who said they had a terrible time replacing the plugs. They could barely reach them. The correct way is to jack up the left front corner, pull the tire, take down the little skirt thing (if it is there) and all 4 plugs are right in front of you.
