ongoing project

Good evening everyone,

I've got a 2006 manual transmission. I have the following issues I would like some advice on.

- left half of the lights are out on the head unit (also radio and controls for the heater don't work, just no response)
- power steering doesn't work
- 4th gear doesn't work (have transmission in my garage so not worried about that right now)
- oil light is on
- power steering light is on
- ABS light is on
- traction control light is on
- i only have a sad little stub for a key, so I need a new key too
- heated seats don't work (and the light doesn't come on)
- fog lights don't turn on
- error code P00 76 FF- Intake valve control circuit low - bank 1
- error code P1 688 FF - meter oil pump stepping motor #4 control circuit

Oh boy. Welcome aboard!
A Lot going on here, but I would start by verifying all fuses under the hood and in the driver's footwell. That could knock out a bunch of problems easily (I'm fairly certain the heated seats should be a fuse problem... They have other problems but if the light doesn't come on, safe bet there's no power going to them).

Power steering: common problem often solved by cleaning the electric power steering contacts under the battery. You can find a DIY here.

Oil light on: assuming you have a good oil level, the next cause is the sensor going bad. It's in the oil pan and you may need to get the pan off to replace, annoying but there's an updated sensor from Mazda that should solve it for good. But the oil light isn't on in the picture? Is it intermittent?

You also have a low coolant light... Do you have coolant?

intake valve tuning circuit: connection to, or the solenoid of, one of the 3 intake valves. They're under the UIM, and are subject to problems at this age.

Oil meter pump code: have a look at your OMP and its connection. If someone had the OMP off for some reason, go back over their work and make sure it was done right. This code should set limp mode, so you won't be going far until it's fixed.
I'm gonna stop there before we spend time fixing dead horses. What is the history of this car? Was the engine compression tested before purchase? Any history of overheating? How recently was ignition (coils, wires, spark plugs)?

Rx8help.com for good summary for new owners (compiled from this forum).

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I do have a lot going on.

LOL...yes I am VERY FAMILIAR with limp mode. It kicked on when I was at autozone, luckily I was only about 3 miles from home...longest 3 miles of my life! It keeps kicking on and off...it's a great time, never know when it is going to happen.

Engine compression was not tested, can I have any shop do that?.No idea on the history. Bought it off of a kid that thought it would be a fun car and it was too much work for him and he just wanted some fast cash. He threw in a transmission, so I can't really complain.

A rotary shop or Mazda dealer (with a working rotary tester!) can do the comp test. This will determine if you need a new engine in addition to the rest. I would not drive this car until you know what you're working with, lest you make it worse.
