Oil leak

1 Attachment(s)
2009 Rx8, automatic - After replacing the "main" fuel sending unit to fix a gauge problem I needed to de flood my car to get her running. Now it is time to fix a oil leak. Car has been sitting for about a month while I work on it off and on to fix the fuel gauge problem. I noticed while I was working on her I had a nice size spot of oil built up. Possibly building under carriage shelding. Prior I notices small spots on garage floor so not sure if this is just a build up from sitting. In the picture I put cat litter on the spot from day before. The darker spot was from this morning, driveway has a slight slant to it as well. The leak itself, could this be the seal (gasket) on the valve pan needing replaced?

Thank you

It could be the oil pan gasket, could be front main seal, could be one of the oil cooler lines, could be a badly seated oil filter, could be a lot of things. Unfortunately, there isn't much we can do just by looking at this picture.

Wait did you say valve pan?

Loki, ooops.... yes meant oil pan. Will take a closer look sometime this week and see if I can determine the source.. Thank you for the feedback..

Do any body knows how to replace the main oil seal? I'm having problems with the mail harmonic bolt. Do it comes out counter clock like normal bolts or clock wise?

I don't know but do you think that a 2011 RX-8 with only 27K miles should need it's oil pan gaskets replaced? Dealer wants over $400 to do it, it seems a bit much if you ask me.

oil pan isnt a gasket. its rtv and is easy and cheap to replace. drain oil, remove pan, clean all surfaces, run bead of good rtv, lightly snug bolts till it starts to set, wait a bit before final tq down, wait a day before filling with oil, enjoy

Is there an oil leak? You're right, it shouldn't normally need any such work done.
