No keys

So I recently picked up my first RX8. Well it was being stored at my friends house and the key was lost. If searched around a bit but maybe there's some new info on this or something I missed.

Is it possible to have a blank cut without the original?
Doesnt seem like it would be.
And secondly can a locksmith program it so I dont have to deal with the dealer?
Some people say yes, some say no.

So basically, can I buy a new blank and have someone cut it and program it without my original key and without having to sell a kidney to be able to take it to the dealer???

Thanks!

For the key blade, you go to the dealer and give them your VIN. They should be able to do something. I know for Hondas, their dealers will give you a key code which you can use to cut the key blade. I am not sure if Mazdas work the same way.

As for programming the chip, it depends on the locksmith. If the locksmith has the programming machine, it should be able to do the job.

Cool! Thanks for the info! I'm gonna make some calls tomorrow morning!

I wasnt sure if a locksmith would be able to program them. Hopefully I find someone that can around here. Dealer wants a good amount of $$$$$ for all this.

No small part of the dealer cost is a new key itself, so I'd suggest picking up keys on ebay. There are plenty of used Mazda keys with uncut blanks in them. You just have to make sure you get the right year.

Gotcha. I was worried about getting fakes on eBay. Know any good sellers? I got a 2004 GT. I'm not even sure what key it has. I just bought it off a buddy but he can't find the key. I am 100% its not that smart key business though.

You can get one that looks like this https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Replace...9857845?_ul=CA (flip key, 4 buttons),but make sure the FCC ID is KPU41805.

2004s didn't have the flipkey option, just a fob and key separate, but the 2005?-2006 flip keys use that same FCC ID.
