newbie here

Hello everyone, I just picked up a 2004 series I RX8 . I am not new to the rotary world, as I used to drive an FC Turbo II over 12years ago lol
I used to be on the RX7 forum under the name Red Sidewinder.
I am sorry for ever selling that car as I do miss how the rotary engine feels.
Looking forward to making new friends on here, possibly meeting some of you this coming summer as I live in Ontario and we have a pretty big car scene.
Also looking to turbo the car eventually lol For now interested in what any of you have to say about COBB , do we have issues here living in Canada? Or are we also screwed by the same mandates as California?

Welcome. Not sure what mandates you mean, but have had a tune via AccessPort since 2012 without problems. It's a fun car in the winter, but like any Mazda you're going to want to defend against rust.

Maybe there are special Ontario regs I'm not up to speed on?

iJintei 01-02-2023 01:38 AM

Well I've been hearing everyone complain, including watching youtube videos online about how cobb took out speed density tuning , therefore you can't disable maf sensor, as well as run catless downpipes, if your car was tuned previous last year april then your all good, but what about us that want to buy now lol So i was wondering if Canada doesn't care about california carb mandates that all these tuning companies have to comply with any "emissions defeating software"

cobb no longer supports the rx8 access port

iJintei 01-02-2023 07:47 AM

oh ok thanks. guess i'll have to go with something else like full stand alone

200.mph 01-02-2023 07:51 AM

mazda edit and adaptronic are popular

Loki 01-02-2023 07:56 AM

You don't need a standalone. MazdaEdit or VersaTune are the tuning solutions these days.
Also I know you said you're not new to rotaries, but the 8 isn't like an FC. RX8help.com has a lot of condensed knowledge from this forum for new owners.

Yea i've been doing some research, i know it can't handle as much power as the 13b - tt or 13b - rew , however i do still want to turbo it in the future.

The mazda edit looks decent , but im just not feeling the UI, I'll check out adaptronic and versaTune :icon_tup: .

tons of forced induction info here but certain members (not too many left that still post here) will get into a pissing match like people arguing about what oil to use lol

yea i can feel that already. the reasearch ive done id go with idemitsu specifically for rotary, but i can't get ahold rn so im gonna just use castrol dino oil 10w40 lol

200.mph 01-02-2023 09:26 AM

its best to not bring up 710 juice at all :yelrotflm. hopefully you do a ton of reading/research about boosting the renny before you think about a build thread (if it happens) cause its all been covered before. a lot of new members over the years sign up and start talking about turbos but most dont happen. gl with the build if ya go through with it.

You don't need Idemitsu either. It's fine, but it's expensive for the job plenty of other oils can do. Read the UOA thread, it'll give you some insight into what folks are running and have run over the years. Oil has changed a lot since the RX8 came out, even more since the FC.

I'd suggest making sure the parts that are on the car now work well (coils, cat, compression, etc) before modding, so you have a solid base.

iJintei 01-02-2023 11:32 AM

yea i figured im older now lol and i can afford it so id prefer going with something specifically designed for rotary engines, for now I'll settle for the castrol dino oil until i can get my hands on it. car is in good health as it only has 143kms i suppose roughly 90k miles? need to change the ssv, coolant level sensor and i am currently fixing the rear struts. i hate our front fenders though, going to make custom ones come spring. I also plan to do a different front bumper.
