New RX-8 Owner in San Diego/Compression question

Hey All,

I just purchased the white 09 GT from SunnyD8 that was in the for sale section. I am super stoked to have a Rotary again. I had a 91 RX-7 in high school and later an 81 that I raced/beat on.

That you for all the great info on the site, I am reading until my eyes cross. Looking through the records for the car, everything seems to be up to date as far as fluids, coils, spark plugs etc. Oil was changed every 5k but usually less.

My only concern is looking at the compression test that was done this month (I should have looked a little closer before buying but I still would have bought the car).

Rotor 1 was an even 7 kgf/cm2 at 240 rpms
Rotor 2 was an even 7.2 kff/cm2 at 250 rpms

According to the chart in another thread its starting to get in to the so so area. As far as I can tell the car runs well, starts well cold etc. The core warranty according to the purchase contract date is up 25 October this year.

Should i be concerned? I was planning on running a premix just as an extra precaution. I do happen to work at a Mazda dealer so when I get in today I am going to talk the guys in service just to see what they say.

Actually I read the last of the series ii compression thread...and should leave well enough alone. On to premixing and enjoying the car!

I definitely have the can't not mess with things disease.

Premix and enjoy. I've started to do so. My compression is 7.60-7.70 @ 260 roughly, so, it helps.

Fuel Smell Under the Hood

Hey All,

I must not have enough posts to put this in the trouble shooting section. I have been reading other threads about fuel leaks after engine replacements.

Before I start taking things apart....

Car is a 2009, ~74k miles, original engine. New plugs, wires and BHR ignition a few hundred miles ago.

When idling and the ac vents are on fresh air, there is a strong raw fuel smell coming in. When its on recirc it goes away.

I can smell fuel under the hood on the passenger side...from the other reading it could be injector seals, or other connections to the fuel rail, possibly the charcoal canister...

The strange thing to me is I can't smell fuel after the car has been sitting and I prime the pump a few times (key on/off/on etc).

It doesn't seem like much is visible without taking the upper intake manifold off.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
