Need to remove OMP before front cover removal?

Just as the title suggests, can you leave the OMP unit on the front cover when you remove it? I have searched and looked at all the various disassembly posts with the engine in and out of the car, and none of them say yes or no, they just get removed.

My primary concern is getting the limp mode issue if i install it wrong and have it out of line where the signal is fouled to the ecu.

Anyone got any insight to this dilemma? About to pull the front cover to replace the stationary gear bearing and just want to make sure i do it right.

You should be more worried about breaking the old and brittle omp hoses. but yes you can.

That was my other big worry. I was trying to leave the engine in the car while I do the repair (provided I drop the pan and don't find copper everywhere), and just drop the transmission to do the rear bearing.

I tried the trick, using the starter to break the front bolt loose, but no dice. I'll try heating it up tomorrow and give it another go. If that doesn't work, i'll wait for the flywheel lock tool I ordered from mazdatrix and give it a go then.

You are more likely to break the position switch taking the motor out...than you are to break anything taking the pump out before. If you don't change the position of the switch you shouldn't have an issue with Limp Mode. Just don't remove the switch from the pump :)

Out of curiosity, how have you determined the stationary gear bearings need to be replaced?

Thanks Dan, that more or less confirms what I was thinking / hoping. It looks like you are bound to do something dumb at some point with the engine deconstruction or removal since everything it packaged so tight.

Funny part about all of this is that i used to work for a Formula Mazda / Pro FM team over 10 years ago. I'm not new to rotary motors, but I have never removed one out of a engine bay or actually rebuilt one (sealed engine spec) since they were all rebuilt by Daryl @ Drummond Engines.

It will start up but has the low RPM knocking noise.
