My $1500 Black RX-8 After 2 Weeks Of Work

RX-8 Just got its bath after being worked on for almost 2 weeks straight. Thanks to Johnathan for helping me with thermostat when i first purchased car to drive her away.

She was a mess when i got her, long starts, overheating, clogged cat, spark plugs installed in wrong location, bad coil pack, bad air pump, broken mirror, dirty on the inside and out.

Purchased her with a chance the engine was bad, seeing as it was almost in perfect cosmetic condition i took the chance and won the lottery :). She had 100k miles on her and it looks like she has already had an engine swap from the bolt markings i have been finding everywhere.

LIST OF WORK DONE TO CAR
Electric Steering Fixed (Cleaned Connectors)
Coil Packs , Plugs and Wires Replaced (Random Misfire)
Oil Changed
Dual Core Radiator Installed
Headers Installed
Clogged Cat Fixed
Air Injection Removed And Deleted From Engine Bay / ECU
EGR Removed And Deleted From Engine Bay / ECU
Decreased Radiator Fans Activation Temp To 170F
Thermostat Replaced (Was main issue when i purchased car)
OMP Oil Injection Maps Increased
Coil-overs Installed
Cold Air Intake Installed
Flattened Idle Graphs To A Solid 1K RPM
Set Warm Up RPM To A Max Of 3K
Multiple Radiator Flushes (Original owner did not properly care for car, still fighting the rust)
Sea-foam flush, oil, intake and gas

Used Openport 2.0 And Mazda Edit For ECU Edits

Future Work To Be Done On Car
Tighten A/F Ratio Based On Pump Gas (Need help with this one)
Sohn Oil Injection Kit (Awaiting Shipment)
Upgraded Fuel Pump
Upgraded Injectors

After i am comfortable with tuning A/F Ratio will go for a budget T3 turbo kit and try to max her out at 350HP-390HP

If anyone can help break down some basics on tuning air and fuel maps in Mazda edit i would really appreciate it.

Car looks great!! I have a soft spot for Brilliant Black 8's! The first thing I would do is ditch the aftermarket intake setup. They can cause issues with the mass airflow meter and do more harm than good. The stock intake setup is actually very good.

Do you know any of the car's history? Looks to be a really clean GT!

why install a header if you plan on a turbo? btw those power #s you seek with f/i will not be easy if you can reach them and it sure wont be cheap

The headers are for tuning practice till i get a complete feel for ECU options.

Also i like keeping hands on the car , it helps me get a feel for the car and understand it better. The more i take it apart, the more i get familiar with its components.

Just now started to adjust the fuel maps to run a bit leaner so i am learning pretty quick.

As far as $$$ i will be upgrading constantly but piece by piece, until i get ready for the turbo. Would like to do a t3, what do people usually get on stock internals on these anyway?

the greddy kit is about 250-260whp iirc. getting close to 400 in a somewhat safe manner will not be easy

an ebay turbo kit? and unknown engine health?

270'swhp @ 8psi / 295whp @10psi for about a weekend or two.... the tune is the most important part and will make or brake the build. good luck.

Congrats -- always nice to see another RX saved.

Looks like he installed it as the first image of the car shows an OEM airbox. The design will be fine and shouldn't cause issues -- there is long-straight section in front of the MAF card, and the card appears to be in the stock location, in respect to the throttle plate. The only challenge I see possible in this design is if the cross-section of the MAF housing was increased, but he has MazdaEDIT and could re-scale accordingly.

Looks good man. I really like the enthusiasm and no holds bar attitude.
There are extensive threads on turbo setups and the problems
they have run into. Brettus and Jcbrx8 come to mind.
more power to you for deciding to turbo a renesis.

I pretty much came to the conclusion that it’s best to leave a Renesis naturally aspirated, since it was designed for it. It also has high compression rotors compared to rx7 13b variants (turbo II and REW). Also the restrictions on the Renesis exhaust ports can become problematic.

If you have the time, knowledge and money, why not.
If i had that combination i would still probably turbo my renesis anyway.
Considering 220whp is achievable N/A, i cant justify 4k+ for 50whp, plus the headaches of F/I.
So eventually..maybe 4 years ill have a REW swapped 8.

just stuff to consider man. Good job so far on bringing your 8 back to life. It seems like you know what you’re in for...

Ya i have been working with Brettus on Google Hangouts, hes been helping me tune over Teamviewer and hotspot. He showed me how to adjust A/F according to data logs to get a very precise tune. As soon as i get the hang of tuning, i will go FI so long as money keeps coming in. The piping location at the manifold seems to be the most challenging part of boosting a renesis, hope i can do it. Will let you guys know when i am ready to jump on FI, wish me luck. Had no clue the logging system of Mazda Edit was so powerful......
