Lost power steering
So today I was driving down a bumpy road and lost power steering I checked my belts and fluid it's all good the pump isn't whining and seems to be spinning fine so I'm not sure what's going on any ideas
|
Your power steering is electric, not hydraulic. There is no pump or belt. You should have a light on your dash for this, it looks like a steering wheel. Often the electric power steering connector under the coolant overflow bottle gets corroded or loose. A clean up and snug fit should solve it.
Be EXTRA careful removing the overflow bottle. The radiator gets brittle with age and there is a nipple for the overflow hose that is very easy to break, creating the need for a new radiator. Try not to remove the bottle at all and get under it by moving the battery and tray out of the way. |

Ok removed bottle and intake cover found two connectors pulled apart and wiped down I don't have the cleaner the diy thread talks about and since car is in op is there a household common item or something I can use ?

Hey!
I'm pretty sure Isopropyl alcohol should be fine to clean the connectors. I hope it works out for you! |
So cleaned connectors and made sure they were snug put all back together and nothing so what's next . . . I also looked at my fuses and couldn't find a power steering fuse if it's electric shouldn't there be one or did I miss it
|
I think the fuse is called EPS, it's right on the battery positive wire. 60 amps.

You do have the power steering light on the dash right? If you do, can you scan for codes? The eps control module might have failed but that's pretty rare...
Can I ask what is the history of this car? It seems to have every imaginable problem, but clearly continues to run :/ |

So something I did with the connectors or the fuse didn't work immediately but the next day when I started the car I now have steering so idk but issue is fixed

Help!
I’m having issue with my power steering as of yesterday! Light is on. fuse is good , I checked the 2 connecters under stock air intake. Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated! Not sure where to go from here.

this car is my daily currently need to repair ASAP Other causes are tough to troubleshoot quickly: the EPS controller under the ECU might have died, you could have a problem with the steering wheel position sensor. Is the steering actually heavy / unassisted, or you just have the light? |

You checked the connectors but did you clean them? There are other causes, but the most probable one is still the connectors being dirty/loose.

Well that's kind of it. You can replace a lot of stuff only to find out it wasn't the problem. You can clean them with nail polish remover, acetone, rubbing alcohol... Vodka will do in a pinch.
If nothing helps, at least temporarily, I'd look into getting a replacement EPS module. It'll be a bit of work to get to it and replace it. The rack and pinion....ehhhhh, if it's heavy but smooth, I'm less inclined to consider that the problem? |
