Key fob will not open trunk, but will open doors

Hello! I am the (mostly) happy owner of a 2004 Rx-8. I recently had both my original key fobs die. I replaced the batteries and still dead. So, I bought two new ones and programmed them. The lock, unlock, and panic buttons work fine, but the trunk release button will not. Searching this forum, I found a thread that specifically mentions the problem I am having, but that thread contained no resolution to the problem, and it is an old one (2009). So, I am starting this one in the hope of some help. Here are the details:

1. I checked that the valet button in the glove box is on. When I turned it off, the trunk release under the dash no longer worked, as expected, and function returned when i turned it on again (but key fob still not working).

2. I reprogrammed the remotes using the trunk release button on the key fobs as the button I press twice to program. The car responded by cycling the door lock, and the other buttons on the key fob worked after. This tells me the key fob trunk release button is sending signal and the car is receiving it.

3. I talked to my Mazda dealer service manager on the phone. He told me that the receiver is the same for the trunk release and door locks; so, it would not be that the signal receiver is not working. He suggested that I hold the button in for at least 1.3 sec to see if that worked. It did not. Other than that, he had nothing for me.

4. I made sure that I had the proper visteon # for my car; that is why the rest of the buttons work.

Any ideas, fellow Rx-8-ers?

How long are you holding down the button...it takes longer to trigger than the doors...few seconds

Same Problem

Hi, I am having the same problem as the original poster. I haven't tried pushing and holding the button yet but if I recall from when the fob worked before, I did not have to hold the button at all. If there comes a solution for this, I would be most grateful. -- UPDATE -- Just tried holding down the button and it did not work. Also tried reprogramming using the usual on/off x3, door open/close x3, then pushing the trunk button twice and it programmed the remote to unlock the doors still but not the trunk.

Did you check the glovebox button?

Yes I neglected to mention that. I have tried all of the previously mentioned fixes (glove box, reprogramming with pushing the trunk button instead, holding the trunk button). Besides, if the valet button in the glove box was off, the button under the dash wouldn't work. Regardless, it is in the correct position. Fob opens doors and turns the alarm on and off but does not open the trunk.

Hello, original poster here. My service manager at the dealer said he same thing about holding the button down longer for the trunk, although I never had to before. That didn't work. They ordered a new fob from the factory for me to test, and it worked fine for doors and trunk. So I ended up buying it. They gave me a discount off list, but it still cost $125. That sucked.

This is interesting: the manager brought a radio signal detector to measure the signal from the remote's transmitter. He could not get measurable signal from either the remotes I brought in or the one he ordered for me, although another one from a differentt vehicle pegged the meter just fine. Must be something different about the transmitters in those old rx8 remotes. So I never solved the mystery, even though I now have a working remote.

Could You please provide us with a number of Your new key fob? Its visible when u separate the key from the remote module. Mine is Visteon No. 41522 and I have same problem as described in this topic :(

By the way does anybody have Visteon No. 41522 and is able to open the trunk?

I believe it is the same. I checked it at the time, and confirmed that it was the same number as the OEM fob. I can no longer look at it because I sold the car. I can tell you that the one I got through Mazda parts worked fine, but the identical one I bought on eBay had to be returned.

Thanks for the answer. I went with my key to Mazda dealer and he told me that I have wrong one. He checked in catalogue and it should be 4 button one (not 3 button like I had). He also gave me a number of item: FE20675RYB / FE20675RYA. I wonder if its true that only 4 button key will work, cause I saw somebody on youtube using 3 button one with RX.
