Just bought my first RX-8

So yeah i just got my first rx-8 and damn this car is beautiful, much diffirent than alot of cars. I have never owned a rotary but been doing research and know the basics of how they work. Like letting it warm up before driving off or shutting it off cold etc etc. So anyways, i live on the big island of hawaii and im currently the 2nd owner now:wiggle:. It's the 2005 shinka edition 4 speed auto with paddle shifters. The current miles on the car is 116xxx but The was engine replaced at 72xx due to a recall? So technically has 42xx on engine. When i picked it up i was to excited to really think about if anything was wrong with it even though CEL was on i didnt really care but i had my fun and calmed down and started noticing little things wrong with. I went to my friends mechanic shop and got a diagnotics, the codes p0661 and p0302 popped up, I didn't really know exactly what they were so i kinda just drove it softly until i figured out what was up with it, but being in the car just made me want to drive hard and fast, so i did one more hard run and didn't really seem like it had much power? I couldn't hit over 7900 rpms and CEL code started blinking, i slowed down, the CEL code stopped blinking, drove home and parked it. Havent started it ever since so im kinda scared if i blew the motor or seals? Im not to sure what to do but im thinking about starting with coils, sparks, plugs. Any help on what is wrong with it i would greatly appreciate it. Also is there anything i should know about being over 100xxx on the car alone ( not motor) thanks!

flashing cel is a misfire and most likely coils plugs and wires should be changed together. you may be do for a fuel pump soon too

+1^
Also, misfires kill catalytic converters, you should check it to be sure it's ok.

Rx808BI, Your engine replacement was NOT a recall. It was probably replaced under Mazda's 8yr/100,000 mile rotary engine warranty. The original engine had to have been compression tested as low compression to get a replacement under warranty with a Mazda remanufactured rotary engine (not wholly new parts). Note: this engine warranty is only for the years or mileage (whichever comes first) from original sale of the car, so you are NOT eligible for another reman engine under this warranty even if the reman engine has only 42,000 miles.

RX8 Club’s recommended maintenance schedule, more comprehensive and proactive than Mazda’s schedule.

30,000 miles:
- Replace Ignition coils
- Replace Plug wires
- Replace Spark plugs
- Clean MAF (mass air flow sensor)
- Clean ESS (e-shaft sensor)
- Reset ESS profile
- Clean power steering connections
- Clean battery terminals and clamps
- Replace transmission fluid
- Replace coolant (Mazda FL-22 is highly recommended)
- Replace air filter
- Replace brake fluid (fluid in the brake lines AND the clutch line)
~$300 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

every 60,000:
...all 30,000, plus...
- Clean all chassis electrical grounding points
- Replace accessory belts
- Clean OMP lines
- Replace rear differential fluid
- Replace thermostat
- Clean / Straighten AC condenser fins
- Clean / Straighten oil cooler fins
- Inspect catalytic converter
- Clean / Inspect intake valving
- Consider / inspect all points in 90,000+ as well, many items fail early
~$130 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

90,000:
...all 30,000, plus any 60,000 not yet done, plus...
- Replace coolant bottle
- Replace radiator hoses
- Replace radiator
- Replace front O2 sensor
- Replace motor mounts
- Inspect clutch pedal assembly for flex / weld breaks
~$900 USD in parts if you shop smartly.
At 100k, anything original in the cooling system is really suspect and failure prone. It represents the biggest threat to your engine.

Not saying it doesn't need new coils, ignition, etc., but if that was my new RX-8, before throwing expensive replacement parts at it, I'd take it to a good Mazda mechanic (one with rotary experience) or rotary specialist for their diagnosis of the problem. But that's just me.
