Intake?
What's the best cold air intake to get? Can't seem to find the right one!

AEM or Mazdaspeed would likely be the best intake for a non-turbo car. They are the same thing. The AEM is available new. The Mazdaspeed version may not be. The Racing Beat system is also popular. You can also watch the Classified Forum for a used one to become available.
I use a Racing Beat duct mated to the stock air filter box. Speedsource used to use an Mazda OEM air filter on their race RX8's when they were still in GrandAm GT. |

I've had both the AEM and the Racing Beat on my car and it really just comes down to which look you prefer more. The Racing Beat is much more "stock" looking while the AEM removes the box so you're left with more room but then you're most likely looking at that ugly plastic tray underneath where the intake box used to be. comes down to personal preference at this point.

There was room for improvement on the OE design and I think a few companies have managed to do so. the OE intake system was VERY well designed which is why our cars don't free up much HP with intakes but my personal opinion is that the 3 listed above are indeed improvements for my car in the environment in which I drive it. that reminds me. if you live in a place with LOTS of rain, the AEM / MS might not be the best choice... |
Yeah I know of quite a few people who have installed and uninstalled the AEM/MS after not wanting to deal with the getting wet BS (and that is here in Texas where rain is not plentiful at all).
As for power gains, I have seen plenty of stock RX-8's pull RX-8's with bolt-ons and I have done before and after install runs as well and the only thing you get is a cool sound. And the main reason the OEM is best is because it doesn't use a shitty filter that doesn't filter well and that is the most important aspect to me. If I could have a stock WIX paper filter on my turbo setup I would. Plus I hate the way the AEM/MS looks without the BHR tray or something similar. Not to mention the tray is there for a reason. But for some reason intakes are something people just have to have it seems (I just sold a Revi in less than a day, :lol:) so if you must have one purchase the RB Revi and duct. I just cannot see paying full price for one. |

I personally use the Racing Beat air duct mated to my stock airbox. "Only" $150ish
Pros: Cooler air temps during cruise, with the stock airbox & VFAD I would usually see 30F above ambient. Less heat = Mo' Better. Cons: Because it pulls air directly from the front of your grill, your air filter will get dirty pretty fast. Have not had water problems at all. |
