I have a brain-buster for you

I have the classic problem, random stalling/ loss of power while driving. However, this troubleshooting post is much more specific.

It seems to only happen after i have been driving the car for an hour or so, and happens randomly (no specific RPM range.) I'll feel a sudden loss of power, rpms will hesitate, and slowly fall down untill it stalls. I sometimes can revive it with pushing in the clutch and giving gas. But thats less than %30 percent of the time.

So, its a 04, MT, 54XXX. I have had it for almost 2 months. The past week I put on a SOHN, BHR Midpipe, and BHR Coils (wires and plugs). Yes, I did clean the MAF...

So basically, its not the classic Coil, Cat, or MAF issue. Those have all been replaced with top of the line parts. I then figured it would be a SSV issue as I have found oil in the ribbed portion of the intake. I did not pull a vaccum to see what pressure it takes, but i did move the arm. It moves very freely with no binding, and snaps right back into place. Just like the valve above it (I forget the name). So it SEEMS like that is okay......right?

So the only other thing I can think of is the fuel pump. Since it only happens after extended periods of driving.

Thoughts?

Not really much of a brain buster. Either fuel pump or compression.

Did you have the compression tested before you spent all that money on parts?

Is it difficult to start when hot? If so, compression. If not, fuel pump.

I put that as the title to draw more attention. No I did not get a compression test before I bought them because no matter what I would be buying those anyway. I do have the slower starter but no, it is not difficult to start when hot, or cold for that matter. Ive never started another RX-8 in my life but I turn the key for 2 seconds and it kicks on...

So what exactly is the issue with the pumps? something heats up and tolerances get out of whack or what? Also, recommended pumps?

I agree with Steve Dallas, sounds like a fuel pump problem. Not surprising with an 11-yr old Series 1 fuel pump.
