Hello Everyone!
Just bought a 2005 6spd. Amazing car, for sure (;
Love the way it rides, drives and handles... but having what I think are ignition issues. Throws a misfire in rotor 1 and idles TERRIBLY about 80% of the time... it seems, that a battery disconnect resolves this issue temporarily until it is fully warmed up and driven about 10miles. Gonna look around and see what I can learn, as this is my first RX and rotory motor. The forums look great, and I look forward to getting to know my RX and the community here better |
Check the announcement at the top of this subforum for a list of first threads. The first two threads both have the information you need to resolve the misfire. Clean the ESS, replace the coils, wires, and plugs, and reset the e-shaft profile, and your issue will likely disappear.

Starting the process in the morning, appreciate the help, bro

Check the suffering from a misfire thread, also do what RIWWP said, I would only like to recommend you reset your fuel trims as well with your new ignition. Which can be done so by unplugging your positive terminal for a few mins.

Welcome and read thru the stickies to learn what you can about the rx8. Post pics of your rx8 will ya...
|
Welcome welcome! You might want to do a quick tune up, change the spark plugs and ignition coils :)

Hi, sorry you've got dramas with the car but anything worth having seems to make us work for it. The 8 is no exception!! Enjoy the toy!

UPDATE
After bringing the car home and it sitting overnight I realized that the engine had been WAY overheated. Yesterday it was about half inch right of the midway mark, today, ALL day it has been 2 ticks left of halfway... The guy and his wife HAD mentioned several times that he didnt know how to drive stick, so Im assuming he drove about 250miles in 4th at hwy speeds... Drove around all day today without issue (aside from a pretty bad idle, which I think may be the MAS as it causes erratic idle) even ran the AC just fine. Am no longer having any issues with misfires. (: However, I STILL veryyyy badly need a new clutch, lol... any suggestions? |
The temperature gauge is actually a dummy gauge, and at about 150 °F should be reading close to the middle. It would only move past the middle mark at extreme temperatures maybe 250+? Not quite sure when, but by then you have way more serious issues going on and your engine is toast, so you better hope you didn't see that temp gauge past the middle... Maybe you were looking at oil pressure?
Also I advise you listen to the advice (clean ess sensor, maf sensor, new plugs, wires, and ignition coils, reset fuel trims and 20 brake stomp reset), just because the misfires are gone for now doesn't mean your ignition doesn't need maintenance... |
Also bad idle is related to ignition... And what makes you think the clutch is bad? There are ways to check if it could be without dropping the trans...

Was for sure the engine temp (water temp) but day 2 and I still havent gotten it above midpoint, and it runs fine.
I still plan on replacing all the ignition components, just waiting for a day without rain. Clutch is slipping, and three different people, apart from myself advised on replacing it... including the guy that sold it to me. |

Anyway, good luck with the car. I love mine and I would HIGHLY recommend doing work on your car yourself since it makes it a lot more personal. |
^ he actually said how he was determining it: Slipping clutch. Which he correctly interprets as needing a new clutch.
I wouldn't put any faith in a $100 clutch though. OEM is the best for an N/A RX-8, and runs you about $360+ shipping for the clutch disc, pressure plate, and bearings. |
Clutch finally gave way today... just spins...
I can actually put the car into gear without disengaging the clutch and the car won't stall, lol... New one goes in tomorrow. Stuck with OEM. |
