Engine Coolant Light 😡
 
Alright ive owned my 07 Rx8 since the 21st of April. The damn coolant light will not go off. I know their known to go bad but what should i do to fix this problem? Replace sensor or tank?

sensor is in the tank and doesnt come out so get a new tank and be careful not to break the rad

By "really really careful", they mean "cut the tube carefully, because even trying to be as careful as possible, you WILL break the radiator". The tube is stronger than the nipple it holds on to. It is shockingly easy to snap the nipple on the radiator. Literally, a toothpick can hold more force before breaking.

oddly when i upgraded my entire cooling system. mazmart wp, t stat, replaced all hoses, aftermarket rad, new tank etc i didnt break the nipple. i break lots of shit but not that time, im sure if i didnt have a new rad it would have broke tho lol

Yes, having a new radiator on hand scares the old radiator into not breaking. Works every time.... ish

Thanks guys, so im still under warranty. Should i go to the dealership and have them do a compression test then get it replaced??

Aftermarket warranty? There is no factory warranty left for any RX-8 that will cover the radiator or coolant bottle. You need a bumper-bumper warranty for that, and the RX-8 had a 3 year 36,000 mile bumper to bumper. The last RX-8s were sold in 2012, being 2015, no RX-8 could have it. If you have an aftermarket warranty though that DOES cover the cooling system, then yes, contact them.

Unplug the sensor, problem solved.

If you're that worried about it then it will cost a bit (couple hundred IIRC?) to replace the entire reservoir container that includes the sensor.

Nah its aftermarket warranty. Bumper to bumper. Mfs better fix the whole problem haha. I would've done my own compression test but if i f*ck it up then ill have to pay for it so ill just have the Ford dudes do it.

If they don't have a rotary engine specific compression tester, then the test results are going to be functionally useless. An analog tester will measure the highest compression of the best face on each rotor. You need the individual values of the highest compression of each of the 6 faces, so you can tell which face is the lowest, and what the difference between faces is.

I'd say just keep an eye out for coolant level with frequent checks and leave the light alone.

If you have no warranty (like me), you can just unplug the sensor and the light will go off. Just keep in mind to check it every once in a while, so your car won't over heat from not having enough coolant.

If you do that, better hope and pray your cooling system doesn't suddenly get hit by a rock and loose coolant while you're driving.
