Driving rpm and oil injection
 

Hi Everybody

I have been looking at this forum for a while and it helped me to buy a used 04 231Ps manual rx8 with 50k miles on it. But the seller said something that i couldnt find anywhere else:

He said that i should always drive the car at 4000rpm (when cruising) because that sould prevent carbon buildup (that plus a few daily redlines), but mostly because the car has 3 oil injectors and the first one starts injecting oil at 4k rpm, the second at 6 and the third at 8k rpm. And i was wondering if this was true, does the car really start injecting oil at 4000rpm or does it start injecting oil sooner (directly when started)?
So do i really need to cruise at 4000rpm to ensure the seals are properly lubricated or can i cruise at lower rpms and still drive safely?
Also is there any way that i could increase the amout of oil being injected in order to prolong engine life?

The owner doesn't know what he is talking about.

The series 1 (2004-2008) has 2 oil injectors, and the are primarily there to cool the side seals. The OMP injects oil to both of them at the same rate, and does so based on engine RPM and load, via a map like this: (the numeric value is the number of OMP steps, which corresponds to an injection rate)

That being said, 3,500-4,500rpm is the typical cruising RPM, where the engine is happiest to just sit there and spin. It's also going to be ~10-15mph over the speed limit, which is typical highway traffic speeds for most of the US. I don't know how it is in the UK.

Yes, with MazdaEdit or a Cobb AccessPORT, you can adjust the values on that map, and increasing the values by ~30% (varies) is a common adjustment done by people with either tool.

I checked around and found that the cobb is hard to find in EU plus it's quite expensive. MazdaEdit on the other hand i can download from the internet. So my question now is what do i need to use mazdaEdit, do i need some special adapter or can i just use the cheap obd2 bluetooth things to connect my car to my laptop? Also do i need some special knowledge and tools to increase the oil injection or is it relatively simple to do? Because from the pic you provided (tnx for that, it's a great insight) i just assumed i would simply install the program, connect to the car, go into oil injection load, click edit and change it. But i bet there is a bit more to it, like tuning and tweaking other settings to compensate for the increased amount of oil, right?

And lastly would it be safe for the car in terms of proper lubrication and preventing carbon buildup if i drove the car at 2-3k rpm for 20min/miles or so? The reason i'm asking is that i have some great mountan roads near me but i have to drive around 20min or 20miles to get there (depends on the road i choose to drive on) and i have to drive on slow roads through towns and villages, where keeping the revs up it quite hard ( a lot of traffic lights and slow weekend drivers). So my question is if i can drive at low revs till i get to the mountains and thrash the car there (revs above 5k and a few redlines), then drive slowly back, or would the slow drives there and back cause the engine to build up carbon and lose compression?

Low RPM's are fine your going to build up carbon no matter what you do it burns gas it burns oil it will get carbon. There are some things to combat this and high revs under load is one. You will not kill the car with carbon because you drove the car 20 miles like a good law a biding citizen.

20mph in 1st or 2nd gear isn't a problem. Low rpm lugging is a problem if that is all the engine sees.
