Car Issues!
I have an 06 Mazda RX-8 and while driving I got a flashing check engine light and then a burning smell. stopped to look under the car and the Catalytic Converter was Red Hot. After I got the car home I raised it up to look under it to look for any thing I may have missed because I changed the Clutch a few days before this started happening. I took the plug wires off to check the plugs and one of the cores of the spark plug came out of the porcelain. I went out and got all new spark plugs and replaced them, but I am still having issues. I hooked up my code scanner and I am getting a P0300, P0037, P0301, and P050A. any help would be greatly appreciated.

How old are your ignition coils? The old OEM coils don't last very long and seeing you are having misfires, get them replaced with either revision C OEM coils/BHR coils/SBG coils.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will test this out as soon as the new ones get here and I will report back weather this resolves the issue or not.

It ended up being both the leading and trailing coils on the front most rotor. I went ahead and replace all of them and everything is running great. Thanks for the assistance UnknownJinX

If your cat converter was glowing, chances are there's some damage or clogging, due to the coils/ plugs being unable to burn the fuel. Bad cat leads to bad engine, so make sure you verify it's clear and unobstructed. Otherwise, those new plugs and could are gonna fail again

^ What Soldier said.... if your cat is glowing red it's most likely clogged and harming your engine.

I recommend a High Flow Cat replacement. I've been thinking about getting the MagnaFlow Cat myself. The RX-8 I just bought has a hollowed out cat on it. It spits flames out the tailpipe! But smells like ass and the sound isn't great. If you don't mind the smell of burning gas/oil and don't care about the environment, alot of guys on here swear by the BHR midpipe.

Most of the cheaper cats will not survive the kind of exhaust temperature RENESIS puts out. Do a few pulls and the stank will be back. A few aftermarket cats that's proven to survive our exhaust are from HJS. They use triple windings in their cats(rather than the single winding used in a lot of the cheaper domestic ones). Some members here use them and see a lot of track duty, and their HJS cats survived. It's pretty pricey(a BHR mid-pipe + HJS Tuning cat is getting close to the cost of an OEM cat for S1), but it will pass emission tests, will have almost no restriction compared to a straight pipe, and will last a good while. Try the cheaper ones at your own risk. They may be cheaper initially, but if they blow out then you would have just wasted that cash. |

You can drop ship a cat of your choosing to Charles and he will weld the cat onto the BHR mid-pipe.
