buying a used rx8 help on price

i been looking to buy found a 2004 with 22,000 miles 1 owner car.they are asking 13,900 for it.i also found a 2010 with under 30,000 for 17,900.i have not checked out the 2010 yet but i seen the 2004 and it was almost showroom quality.i even talked to there head mechanic and he is also the owner of mazda of bedford here in ohio.he ran compression test and said it was the highest he seen on a rx8 and also was willing to lift the car up to show how clean it was under.what shocked me was i looked under kelly blue book and the 2004 rx8 with its miles and i even picked the grand touring and the car iam looking at is not said trade in value was only 8,500 iam curious what they paid for it and how much there marking it up for.alot of private sellers around here with around same miles are asking $12,000.so what a good price to buy these cars i know the 2011 are still up around 19,000 to 22,000.

I would never pay even close to 14k for a 2004. Series 2 rx8 is better and can be had for not much more money

BigCajun 08-02-2013 11:26 AM

If a dealer is asking 13900, you can probably get it for 2k less.

J8635621 08-02-2013 11:28 AM

I would not pay 12k for a 2004 either but that's me. It's closer to possibility if it is indeed showroom new but I still wouldn't.

clevebill 08-02-2013 11:40 AM

i just looked 2009 with 23,000 miles is going for 17,900 to bad its 350 miles away from me.i read and seen they did alot of changes to the motor on the the 2 series does that make the engines better than before.

clevebill 08-02-2013 11:44 AM

funny storie i forgot to mention i went to a used car dealership and looked at a 2005 rx8 and started it up ran fine.here is the funny thing when it was running the sales woman that was with me said to me its a peppy car for only being a 3 cylinder i almost wanted to laugh and say there is no cylinders in it.its funny how sales people sometimes no nothing about what there selling kinda scary.

BigCajun 08-02-2013 11:58 AM

FWIW, I paíd $14 k for my '04 GT with 18.5k miles fully loaded in near showroom condition a year ago.
I was not shopping around, I fell in love with it and had to have it. They were asking $17900.
I later found the orig. sticker in the manual, $35,559.
I still love it, & think it's worth it (for now) . :)

Someone will buy the car eventually, question is what is it worth to you? Try and talk them down if you really like it. You know the value is $8500. So if you end up totaling it god forbid, the insurance company is only going to give you the value of the car. If your financing it you will be on the hook for the other roughly 5k. Not to mention your immediately upside down on the loan when you take it out. Personally I would haggle around the 9k range and see how they respond, if I just had to have that car. You would be better served looking at 06's or better in that price range.

clevebill 08-02-2013 12:38 PM

or maybe just wait a year or so and see how much the 2011 come down in price with decent miles.i hear the rx7 is comming back but i also heard the price is going ti be somewhere between a 370z and a nissan gtr

BigCajun 08-02-2013 12:38 PM

A better indicator of " what it's worth" would be the KBB retail price, not trade-in.
There's a substantial difference.

Oh really the rx7 is coming back? Which executive at Mazda said this?

clevebill 08-02-2013 01:07 PM

ok i did a 2004 grand touring with the miles suggested retail pay from a dealer said $10,156.if ya have a chance look under autotrader for 2004 rx8 the price was 13,900 and its from mazda of bedford its in the cleveland area the car is red has leather interior i cant tell if its grand touring it dosnt say.

clevebill 08-02-2013 01:23 PM

i forgot i have the carfax on the 2004.car made and shipped 3/03/2004 then it must of sat on the lot for a year because it shows first owner at 7/06/2005.then maintenance was done in 5/03/2007 oil change i hope he did oil change in between that time frame.then oil change in 6/30/2008 then the rest where emission test 8/15/2008 had 8,000 miles then 8/27/2010 14,000 miles and then 11/09/2010 at 15,860 maintenance check at dealer.as ya can see he barely drove the car from 2008 to 2010 he put only 6,000 miles on it.the owner lives close to me i wonder if there is a way i can find out his number and give him a call to ask about how he took care of it.

BigCajun 08-02-2013 01:34 PM

I wouldn't worry about contacting the previous owner, IMO.
If you already have an accurate rotary engine compression test done, that would be the most important thing.
You have the VIN#, so you can call Mazda to be sure it got the necessary recall work done.
If they show you the test with 6 sets of numbers and are willing to give you a copy, that would be a good sign.
Also getting some type of bumper to bumper warranty, even for a year would be a plus.

I'm curious as to why he's asking so much

Who are you referring to as "he".
Seller for asking so much of an asking price, or OP for asking questions so much?

gwilliams6 08-02-2013 06:21 PM

One key thing to remember, a 2004 is already out of Mazda's rotary engine 8yr/100,000 mile warranty for 2004-2008 series 1 RX8s. There were so many improvements over the years since the 2004s that I would not recommend buying that year, even at a reasonable price. many will argue that here, but the facts and history of many 2004s and 2005s show a higher rate of engine failures and other issues. No offense to those who love their 2004s and 2005s. Be sure to have it compression tested before you buy any RX8 or you could be in for expensive trouble.

check nada if you want to inflate what you think your car's value really is. nada isn't even close to reality.

craigslist is where you should be looking for used car average prices(and generally the lowest price you see is the average selling price).

BigCajun 08-02-2013 07:32 PM

Hey clevebill, I looked at the red 8 you were looking at. I don't think it's a GT.
I have my original window sticker, and it lists under Grand Touring pkg. MT;
*Bose audio & leather trim seats
*8 way power driver seat
* heated seat with lumbar support
* Homelink day/night mirror/ moonroof
*Heated mirrors & Xenon headlights
* Stability control (DSC)/ Foglamps

(I'm not sure if the rest is included in the GT, but following these, also with asterisks are;
2AP Appearrance pkg.
*front air dam
*Side & rear aero flares
2RP Rotary accent pkg
*polished front rotary accent
*polished rear rotary accent

I hope this helps you in your decision.
Good luck!:)
( I have a picture of my GT in my profile album if you want to see what it looks like)

just curious do they give warrantys on a car that old and would it be real exspensive.whats the warranty on a 2011 would it be 3/3600 if so it would expire 2014.

J8635621 08-02-2013 09:20 PM

8 yr/100k mile engine warranty

clevebill 08-02-2013 09:30 PM

does the 8 year 100,000 apply to the 2011.i thought it only applied to 2004 to 2008

RIWWP 08-02-2013 09:34 PM

Go to MazdaUSA.com, click on the Owners -> Warranty

It says: (highlight is my own)

RX-8 Rotary Engine Core Limited Warranty Extension
Mazda Motor Corporation is extending the warranty coverage on Rotary Engine Core Components on all RX-8 vehicles produced after the 2004 model year. The warranty coverage for the Rotary Engine Core Components is extended to 8 years (96 months) from the original warranty start date, with a 100,000 mileage limitation. The following is a list of components covered by this warranty:
Rotary Engine Core
Rotary Housing and Internal Parts
Internal Seals and Gaskets
Keep in mind that it's not 8 years from the model year, it's 8 years from the first in-service date for that car.

So my RX-8 was a 2005, built late 2004, first sold in September of 2006, so the 8 year mark would be up until September of 2014. Many RX-8s were sold later than you might expect, and that got later and later as the model years marched on. You can easily find 2009 RX-8s that weren't first sold until 2010 or 2011.

thats good to know if i look at getting a 2011 at least the warranty will be good till 2019 and i plan on driving it during the summer or at least till the first sign of salt goes on the streets.when i had my 2005 gto maybe the most i drove it was 5,000 a year.i did like my gto it was fast but i got bored of it after awhile iam hopeing with this rx8 from what a read from and seeing youtube videos the rx8 is a joy to drive and if it dont put a smile on your face something is wrong with ya.i sat in the scion frs some compared to the rx8 but the frs had low grade interior compared to the rx8 and seamed way smaller.
