Buying a new RX8.
 

Hey Guys,

I need a little help. Im looking to buy a RX8 within the new few weeks.

I have herd allot about the engines flooding which i know can sometimes be avoided. Are there any particular years to avoid? I'm looking at the 192bhp (due to insurance) and looking at years between 2003-2006.

Also have there been any recalls on the RX8.

Would be appreciated if someone could point me in the right direction,

Get an 06 or newer. They still have the 8 yrs 100k mile warranty...

It's not so much about the year of the car to avoid as it is doing regular maintenance and preventative maintenance. For example, doing regular maintenance, as well as changing the plugs/ignition coils can help in the engine not flooding due to the coil weakness / plug faults. Also, upgrading to the BHR Ignition system is a great idea and I have always highly recommended it to others as it greatly helps reduce the chance of flooding.

Other than that, it is just knowing some basic do's and don'ts. For example, don't just go out to your car one morning, start it up, drive it 10 seconds and shut it off. Firstly, you should let it warm up a bit before driving it (more depending on temp), and secondly, it is a good idea to not shut it off until it has reached normal operating temperature. Doing just that and avoiding doing the situation as described above will also very greatly lessen the chance of flooding (as the situation above causes flooding)

There are many things to do, please read through the stickies for new members as there is a wealth of information in them as well as around the community. What I have provided is simply a sampler.

EDIT: As for recalls regarding this particular concern, the only thing that really happened was that Mazda extended the engine warranty to 8 years / 100,000 MILES; whichever comes first obviously. Now although this wasn't directly related to flooding but more compression loss / engine failure, flooding the engine can be a factor in doing just that.

What country are you in? "192 hp" sounds like you're not in the US. Recalls are country specific.

In the US there's the extended warranty that Fungster mentioned. There were also a couple of recalls/special programs that involved reflashing the ECU. Those help avoid flooding and also improve the oil injection schedule.
