bad motor. replacement options?
 

Just bought an 8 and I've been reading a lot on here about different options for replacing my 8's motor.

Here is the issue. It has extremely low compression. Starting it is labored and slow with fluctuations in power output. So far I haven't found a thread with a solid answer to whether or not to go with a Mazda reman motor. Some say they are a plague (my words) others love them. Mazda quoted me 6k USD (2k labor, ~3k parts) installed and I would rather do it myself for that. I'm totally out of my depth when it comes to the rotory motors. Any ideas!?

Its an 04, six speed. 85% stock, some mods

First off, I've no experience when it comes to rebuilding rotaries, but I've read quite a bit about them since I got mine 2 years ago.
That being said, my impression is that even though the Renesis is simple in design, it takes some expertise to rebuild them correctly.
It appears to me dealer rebuilds are more hit and miss than those who specialize in rotaries.
One of the most recommended is Rotary Ressurection.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I think the only way I would attempt it is if I could to do it gradually in my spare time and could afford to pay a pro if I screwed it up.:)

I think i did a good job rebuilding mine, but i have never done a compression test and only have 3000 miles or so on it. I have a good set of tools and I spent about 800 in tools specifically for the rebuild. Step wear tool, precision v blocks, precision straight edge, water pressure tester, bearing tools and a few more.

Its a big decision to rebuild it yourself but not too bad if you've ever rebuilt an engine before.

If you just want to swap a reman out. Do it! It is relatively easy. It took me about 4 hours to pull it and 4 more putting it back.

I don't think a rebuild is possible. I'm almost positive the core is shot along with the rotors. Just a matter of time now really. Mine has almost 90k mi. on it.

Any suggestions on where to get a decent motor? I've looked at one business on this site and another different third party, but I'm concerned on the quality for the price. I can only spend about 3k but I don't want to swap it with another motor that will fail in a few years anyway.

For 3k you'll have to get a Mazda reman and replace it yourself. I cant speak to their quality at all.
