CO About to buy an RX-8, But what year is it?

This question is an odd one I know, but I am in the home stretch of buying a 2005 Mazda RX-8. Here is the catch though; It is a 6 speed Automatic, which doesn't make sense because I was fairly certain the 6 speed auto came out in 2006. Is this just the ignorance of the person selling the car or am I the one being stupid? Maybe he bought the car in 2005 when it came out? If this is any cause for concern in terms of buying this 8 please let me know, because I wouldnt mind buying a 2006 for the price of a 2005 if you get my drift

P.S. this is my first post and I looked around for info on this but couldn't find any. I don't want to ask the guy selling it so I wanted to get another opinion. I hope this isn't a duplicate post.

Do you have the VIN? The 10th digit will give you the year.
