235 45 r18 rub

Hey guys. Not sure if my first post went through or if it has not been approved yet so I apologize in advance if that is the case. I have p235 r45 18 on my 2007 RX8. I purchased the wheels and the tires at a substantial discount and that is the reason why it is such a odd size that I have on them. No issues with the front wheels, but when I have a full load of groceries or a second passenger I do hear rubbing in the rear tires. I'm assuming that it is coming from the inner Tire hitting on both tires. Obviously everything looks good back there when the car is not under load. So I am wondering if I go with two 20 or 25 mm spacers that may alleviate that problem. What do you guys think? Getting new tires and wheels is not an option for monetary concerns.

What's the offset on the wheels? The tire size shouldn't really be a problem, but if the offset is wrong then that would do it. Usually aftermarket wheels have lower offset than stock, which means your wheel sits further out and spacers won't help. Do you have a picture? Can you find out exactly where it's rubbing? Also even with a passenger or groceries the car shouldn't sit that much lower.

Gold504 11-15-2020 11:53 AM

I do not know the wheel offset, i will definitely take some pics right away.

Pics of wheel.

Yes, not sure of the offset. Perhaps that bottom arm is scraping the inside of the rim? Forgive me, i know little of vehicles.

I posted a bunch of pictures so they should be up soon once they get approved. I pulled both wheels off also I inspected the area all over and could not find any signs of grinding anywhere. The only thing that I could come to the conclusion of is that the noise is coming from maybe the coils or the the rods if there are any back there or the actual strut itself. The tire os showing zero damage on both sides and the rims are flawless

make sure the rear struts are not bad
are they the original shocks and springs?
the car should not sag enough to rub when people are sitting in the back
check if the tire is touching the fender lip when there is weight in the back
that would mean the offset is wrong
you could also roll the fenders in this case

Gold504 11-15-2020 06:26 PM

The tire definitely does not touch the lip of the fender even with a second passenger and the full load of groceries that I had in the trunk which included 2 24 packs of water and all my groceries. It did drop down some but it did not come close to touching the fender I believe the offset is correct. And as far as the coils and the shocks or struts they may be the original I'm not sure. When I push weight down on the deck lid the back of the car does go down fairly easy so that could very well be the problem. However I did not notice this problem until I put the new rims and tires on. Is there a way for me to actually tell what the offset of those rims are. Thank you for your help!

Gold504 11-15-2020 06:30 PM

There is also not a single mark on any of the tires in the rear as to where they would be rubbing and there are no marks on the fender Wells under the lip or anywhere inside the well itself. For good measure I spray painted black the inside area the sea maybe if I could figure out where it's rubbing and I drove the car all day today and I didn't see any paint missing whatsoever anywhere in the well.

Loki 11-15-2020 09:23 PM

If you remove one of the wheels, the offset is usually stamped on the inner surface of the hub or a wheel spoke. Something like 18x8JJ followed by a number. That number is the offset. What car are these off of or what is the brand/model of wheel?

They do seem to stick out more than the stock wheels. Not terrible but maybe enough to rub in some conditions.

Jedi54 11-15-2020 09:36 PM

Hard to tell from the pictures but the tire size shouldn't be an issue. I ran 245's for years on the OEM 18" wheels.
offset would really help us out here because looking at the first two pictures, it looks like it might stick out more?
someone mentioned bad struts, that could be an issue but lets focus on the wheels first.

Gold504 11-15-2020 09:38 PM

I picked them up at lkq for $30 each. They were on a 1992 ghetto town car. Lol. Not oem, but they were in good condition over all. If they were rubbing against the fender wouldn't I see any signs of that though at least in the tire itself or on the paint underneath the top of the fender? It's a shiny as when I waxed it two days ago. If you look at them from the side they are pretty much parallel to the fender maybe just a little bit to the inside. I could always do new Springs and struts but that would be pricey if I really did not need them so I definitely want to narrow down the fact if it is the offset or something else. On another issue I bought some H7 LED lights that plugs right into the factory wiring but did not light up I reversed orientation and they still did not light up so I assumed that I needed some kind of extra harness or anti flicker convertor. I pretty much said to hell with it and picked up some SilverStar Ultra lights tonight they seem to be the closest thing you can get the hid without actually being hid.

On a side note, I love the car! My girlfriend bought it for me for $4500 with the only issues being a bad battery and one of the solenoid wires broke. I just replaced the wiring and put 3 new solenoids on. The car only has 107K on it. Only cosmetic issues is a small dent in the driver door, and the typical road chips on the front end. Got a new system ready to go once I get the ridiculously expensive $150 Metra kit. Lol.

Some before and after shots. The spoiler I got fpr $10 off another rx8. Just needed to be sanded, primed, adhesive promoter and some black duplicoat black.

Ill look for them right now fellas

Looks sharp. The car comes with HIDs, so I'm not sure what's going with your lightbulbs. Is this a base model auto? Judging by the old wheels in the picture, it is.

So I'm going to assume you haven't had a compression test or been filled in about the whole rotary thing then? Read RX8help.com, Potential Owners section. There are things you should know to keep this car happy for a long time

That last picture is a wheel weight. All wheels have them, they're installed when tires are installed.

Gold504 11-15-2020 10:09 PM

Heres a shot of where it would be rubbing, if it is. Would this be where i roll the fender?

Gold504 11-15-2020 10:12 PM

Thanks loki. I will definitely read the RX8 help section. And yes this is a base model Auto nothing extra in it and I was kind of curious as to why the LEDs did not work. It looks like when I drive it the lights seem more yellow than white definitely more yellow than white. My girls 2016 CX-9 has extremely white lights but they could be on the Xenon system I'm sure.

Gold504 11-15-2020 10:15 PM

And no I have not had a compression test done yet I've had it for about a month now. I did have the oil changed in it as per specs in the manual and I've done some basic maintenance under the hood like cleaning it, putting a new air filter in which was the hardest thing I've ever done when it comes to air filters LOL , checking the wires which seemed kind of brittle for basic automobile wires. A lot of them were electrical taped together cause they're so thin it seems.

Gold504 11-15-2020 10:26 PM

I found another stamp but I'm pretty sure it's just another weight on the front wheel so tomorrow I'll either Jack it up and look for it or bust out my calipers
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...3bea152ccf.png
and use the formula to find out what it is.

holy crap! that was 14 years ago now...

Metra kit is nice, I have tinkered with swapping out the head unit for something newer that I can run android auto on...
