2004 RX8 issues
Hi I’m new to the forum and I was hoping to find some answers here. I was driving home one day and I was getting very bad misfires and after driving for about 15 mins my car barely had any power and it was hardly accelerating so I pulled over and as soon as I pulled over it shut off and wouldn’t start again. I had to call some friends and we managerd to bump start it and I barely got it home. I wasn’t able to make complete stops because it would just die. I changed the coils and plugs and cleaned the MAF sensor however the car would still misfire like crazy. I plugged in the od2 reader and the codes are p2004, p0335, p2070, p2259, u0155, p0301, p2070, p2259. I was able to get it started after replacing the coils and plugs but it wouldn’t idle so while keeping the rpm up my cat blew up and now it won’t start at all since then. |
Sounds like driving on failing ignition lead to clogged cat, which cause engine damage. An unfortunately common way to kill a rotary, but hard to tell if its salvageable with all those codes. They're not related, but would certainly cause poor performance/poor starting.
You may want to have a compression test before you invest more money in this engine. How did you identify that your cat blew up? About the codes, have you Googled them? Most are related to valves in your intake tract being in various states of stuck open, stuck closed or having a failed solenoid. Something is clearly going on there, and this is is also common-ish. It may also help to disconnect the battery and clear the codes, and see which ones come back. How handy are you? Look up "SSV cleaning" and see if you can move the valves by hand. If you can move it, find the bank of 3 solenoids for the 3 intake valves, and swap the SSV one with one other one. This should help you start the car, I'm thinking it's not holding idle because the valve is stuck open, when it's supposed to stay closed until 3500rpm. It may also be not starting because it's flooded from all the start attempts. So look up deflood procedure and/or take out the spark plugs to clean them. If you're not handy, I suggest finding a rotary specialist to take care of this for you. Sounds like there are multiple issues with this car. |
Drop the cat and look at it, broomstick it is a fix, but you will fail emissions if that's a thing in your area.
And yeah, get a compression test if possible to see if you have more damage. |
There are many simple fixes for 8s that can lead to where you are now if not taken care of.
Hopefully you didn't cause any major damage, but you'll have to do some troubleshooting. A lot of it is pretty simple. Checking coils and plugs can be done with a cheap tester. Pull the air filter and check the intake for oil. Clean ESS and MAF sensor, do the NVRAM reset. (20 brake pedal stomp. Check the cat, all these are pretty simple and can fix many common problems. I’d suggest trying to fix it yourself if you’re handy , unless this is your daily. Or if you have the money to blow then let someone else handle it. But knowing these engines are not made anymore, mechanics will become more and more sparse. Best of luck man. :Peace: |

My starter is very weak and it cranks way too slow so would I still be able to compression test it? I know the cat cat blew up because it started shooting pieces of it on fire out the exhaust. Yeah I’m pretty handy but I just don’t know too much about rotaries so that’s why I’m here lol |
