'07 rx8' doesn't describe the topic, this is about automatic transmission fluid

Well i have an automatic 6speed 07 Rx8 with 39000 miles is it better to do a flush on the transmission and gear oil or just a normal change?

What IS the best transmission/gear oil to use?
I was thinking BG.

I recommend flushing the transmission. As far as the oil to use, consult the owner's manual to determine the proper oil spec, it is different from the 04/05's. Same holds true for the differential oil.

Immediately I went to page 8-4 in our owners manual which has the schedule for maintenance of such items and its missing ATF. :uhh:

Hmm, I have a 6spd so I really don't know.

Anyone else? Is the ATF not supposed to be replaced?

EDIT

After reading through a few of these threads (which you should have done too), I see absolutely no reason why you think you need to replace it.

You have the right idea, Change it. If you don't know what oil to use go to Mazda and get it from them. I have a 6 speed so I don't know the ATF type for an aftermarket fluid.

I also have a 6 speed, but it is the automatic like the OP's.

It requires a transmission fluid meeting the JWS 3309 spec. I buy it by the case from AV Lubricants: Mobil ATF 3309 Case of 12 quarts and do a drain and refill every 30,000 miles, per the dealer's recommendation.

I'd still be interested if having someone chime in about the lack of an official period for changing the ATF. Many people seem to be saying that it "should" be changed here and there but based on what?

I have an 6spd manual but I'm just curious.

I go by the color of the fluid.

Transmission oil, like engine oil actually has a life expectancy, it does not last forever. Lack of a change interval from the manufacturer is not a green light to just drive on that original oil until you sell, the transmission fails or whatever. My typical rule of thumb for ATF is once every 2 years or every 30,000 miles. My truck is changed every year regardless of mileage. Not saying that is what is required for the 8, that is just what I use for everything I have ever owned regardless of what the manual reads.

Unless Mazda had developed some magic ATF that will last the life of the vehicle, it needs to be changed at regular intervals, just as you would your oil. Coolant, brake fluid and power steering fluid (obviously none in the 8) are also fluids that need to be serviced, although most people never touch them. No fluid is over two years old in anything I own.

Makes sense, and that's kind of what I already thought. I would change mine at ~the same interval should I ever own an automatic (lets hope never!).
